Houston-based Electro/Rock duo Starline is thrilled to announce the release of their debut album CJM on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016. Starline is comprised of former NBA point guard Matt Maloney and Pale frontman Calvin Stanley who began working on the original album two years ago. The 11-track album was recorded at Houston's famed SugarHill Recording Studios and was produced/engineered by GRAMMY-winning producer Steve Christensen.

An official album release party is scheduled at Hughes Hangar, located at 2811 Washington Ave., Houston, Texas 77007 on Thursday, Feb. 25 starting at 7 p.m. The listening party style event will also feature live performances by DJ Sun and Dj Zeelus (remixing tracks from CJM) as well as a video premiere of Starline’s debut single, “Soul Crusher.” The event is free and open to the public (21 and above) and proceeds from CD sales that night will benefit Sunshine Kids, a non-profit organization dedicated to children with cancer.

“I've had the unique and fortunate opportunity to realize a dream of playing in the NBA,” said Maloney. “But songwriting has always been another passion of mine. Being able to focus my energy and creativity on this album has truly been a fulfilling experience.”

Calvin Stanley and Matt Maloney were friends for ages. But Stanley, the creative force behind the Houston band Pale, had no idea that retired NBA point guard Maloney had prodigious musical talents until another friend insisted he listen to one of Maloney's self-recorded songs, titled "Starline.”

"It was just a demo, but that's all it took for me," Stanley recalls. They tried collaborating - and quickly found their groove. Adopting Starline as their musical identity, they began crafting the melodic, deeply layered and richly textured electro-rock that graces their first album, CJM. The title honors Maloney's late brother, Christopher, who passed away in 2013.

"Calvin has immense talent,” said Maloney. “Whether it be vocal range, creating a driving bass line or implementing minor shifts throughout a chord structure, the man can flat out roll."

“I had never worked with another songwriter before so it’s been great to be able to grow my craft with someone like Matt - he is always focused and prepared,” said Stanley. “His melodies and riffs are always on point and I learned to sing a bit differently thanks to his style and method. For every hook you’re hearing we probably left another three or four on the table. There is no shortage of ideas in Starline.”  “Each track turned out really strong and assured,” said producer Steve Christensen. “These guys are whip smart and capable in the studio. It was cool to explore a lot of emerging tech in the process - once the core of a song was established the cables and instruments just kept piling up in the studio. We had the freedom to build a lot of layered bits and really creative transitions. I think the album kicks total ass.”

CJM’s bedrock, its creators say, is rhythm. But their goal is to move both bodies and minds. “We’ve always been drawn to bands that can get you moving to a song and thinking at the same time,” says Stanley. “We want our music to be fun — danceable and quotable.”

The album’s rhythmic heartbeats give pulse to soundscapes that range from the crunchy rock of “Bruise” and the fuzzed-up grit of “It’s On,” to the lushly swirling waves of “Click to Verify.” The striking trait throughout, however, is unpredictability. Each song travels unexpected curves, from a sudden acoustic guitar break or single piano-key plink to a stuttery synth line, falsetto vocal or arresting lyric; every listen seems to unearth more surprises.

“It’s twice the ride in headphones,” Stanley observes. With every song packing more than 100 tracks — even a 10-second segment might contain 30 — that’s an understatement. Both Maloney and Stanley interchangeably played every instrument on the album and split vocals. “All of these songs were an intensive exchange of ideas and performances from first chord to last word,” notes Maloney. One other player, fellow Houston musician Arthur Yoria — the man who urged them to get together — is credited with contributing vocals and guitar on the closing track “Click to Verify.”

Maloney and Stanley say Christensen played a huge role in capturing their musical vision. “We were extremely fortunate to have worked with such an accomplished and talented producer in Steve Christensen,” said Maloney. “He made sure our vision of the songs were realized. I hope we achieved our goal of conveying our creativity, rhythm, melody and substance in these tunes.”

There's no coincidence that growing up they both independently listened to new wave/indie and alt/rock epics - evident on tracks like “Downgrade” and “4 on the floor.” This influence is what morphed into their self-dubbed fusion of genres Electrock/Altronic. Early listeners have been comparing them to shades of Billy Elliot, Iamx, Kasabian and BRMC — even touches of Philip Glass on this debut album.

“It's surreal to finally get this music out to the public,” said Stanley. “We are really excited - after two years of working on this it feels like a new chapter has begun for us. We hope that the synergy that we have developed will translate into a fun and emotional experience for open ears and hearts out there.”

Austin-based folk-pop virtuosos The Belle Sounds are thrilled to announce the forthcoming release of their album "The Sea Within" on Friday, July 20. Their official album release party will take place on Saturday, July 21 at One-2-One Bar located at 1509 S. Lamar Blvd. St. 600, Austin, Texas. Doors are at 7:30 p.m., with The Sanco Loop playing at 8 p.m., The Belle Sounds at 9:30 p.m. and the Brandon Aguilar Band at 11:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 and there will be a free download card of the album with entry. For more information on the group, please see www.thebellesounds.com.

Led by frontwoman Noëlle Hampton and electric guitarist André Moran, The Belle Sounds create lush soundscapes intertwined with beautiful harmonies and emotive lyricism. Their sound is reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac, Neko Case, Aimee Mann, The Shins and Jenny Lewis, yet exudes its own power and depth through Noëlle's heart-wrenching vocals and her and André's guitar interplay. Other artists featured on the album include studio drummer Evan Hutchings, local Austin bassist John Michael (Night Glitter, Charlie Sexton), Kris Nelson on bass and backing vocals on several tracks along with Brian Standefer (Alejandro Escovedo) on cello. Noëlle and André enlisted the help of producer/engineer/keyboard player David Boyle (Patty Griffin, Fiona Apple, Robert Plant, Eddie Vedder, Okkervil River, Shinyribs) for the new project and recorded it at Church House Studio in Austin.

"I am so excited to let these songs fly," says Noëlle Hampton. "It has been a long time since we released a record and it feels wonderful to share this collection in the honest form that it is in. David Boyle's organic approach to the production was just what these songs needed. He was looking for that immediate emotional response you feel when listening to something. I think people will get a true sense of us through this record."

"Working at Church House Studio was truly inspiring," says André Moran. "There is something about that room that lets you open up into its vast space and dig deep into the music. David was an invaluable creative guide for us. We are so excited to be releasing this record that we are all so proud of."

Located at the heart of Downtown Austin’s booming Warehouse District, Parker Jazz Club (117 W. Fourth St. #107b, Austin, Texas 78701) is one of the city’s premier live music venues. Since opening in 2018, the state-of-the-art listening room has hosted jazz legends including the Count Basie Orchestra, Joey DeFrancesco, Kenny Garrett, Curtis Stigers, Doug Lawrence, Jerry Weldon, Louis Hayes, Butch Miles, Nestor Torres, Tom Scott, Herlin Riley, Eric Reed, and many more. And you just never know who might sit in — Wynton Marsalis and Kamasi Washington have been known to play impromptu sets on the Parker stage. But the room is also revered for its inimitable Parker Jazz Club House Band, which draws a dedicated crowd every weekend. For a 360-degree virtual tour of the venue, please see here. For more info and additional programming, visit parkerjazzclub.com.

In addition to announcing a stellar lineup over the coming months, Parker Jazz Club is hosting an invite-only VIP media and music industry happy hour on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2021, from 6 - 8 p.m. Guests will get an in-depth look at the space while enjoying a special performance from the Parker Jazz Club House Band. Small bites and drinks will also be provided. Media may RSVP by emailing [email protected]
“I wanted something you would see if you went to New York and spent an evening at Dizzy’s Club, or
went to London and visited Ronnie Scott’s, or went to Paris — a truly timeless, world-class venue,” said Kris Kimura, Parker Jazz Club founder and owner. “But also, it couldn’t be too stuffy because this is Austin. People in Austin are cool. We wanted to kind of mix that high-end thing with this hip, distinctly Austin thing, and I feel like we’ve hit the mark.”

Parker Jazz Club has carefully crafted and fine tuned “all the small details” to elevate the signature intimacy and ambiance of the acclaimed basement lounge. With talented acts appearing Wednesday through Sunday each week (see schedule below), Parker Jazz Club also offers a series of Jazz Therapy shows every Tuesday night from 8 - 9:30 p.m., welcoming everyone for a night of live jazz music that’s good for the heart and soul. Tickets are $10. Additionally, all medical professionals and teachers/educators can attend the Tuesday night shows free of charge with a valid ID.

“Our Jazz Therapy series was initiated during the pandemic (once the club reopened to the public) as a thank you to those phenomenal frontline workers who were helping the community navigate COVID,” said Kimura. “This summer, we decided to include educators for similar reasons. What's more, this weekly show provides an easy and inexpensive access point to the club for guests, with a $10 cover. The ‘therapy’ aspect of this series plays on how simply listening to jazz music is actually quite healthy and helpful in lowering blood pressure and relieving stress. Jazz Therapy was conceived as a way for us to give back.”

While following all CDC and local guidelines, Parker Jazz Club has remained flexible to respond to health guidelines during the pandemic and will continue to practice the utmost in safety measures. Kimura has amplified his state-of-the-art livestreaming program over the past year to share content on the Parker website for each performance. It’s also an optimal opportunity to capture each live show with a well-produced video recording, another key feature of the listening room.

"Jazz is a living, breathing artform with these beautiful, ephemeral moments of improvisation that simply have to be experienced," said Kimura. "From the start, capturing and archiving the musical history being made at Parker was important to me, and integrating the best livestream production was as vital as the sound and lighting design in the club. We've recorded every single set played here. The pandemic really increased interest in our ongoing livestream, and we're really proud to broadcast live jazz to the world from our humble stage in Austin."

Named after the young son of award-winning jazz vocalist and multi-instrumentalist founder/owner Kimura, Parker Jazz Club began with a basement and a dream. With the support of investors who shared his vision, the Austin musician set out to build a world-class venue on par with renowned jazz clubs such as Birdland, Blue Note, and Yoshi’s. Parker Jazz Club was created to contribute to the appreciation, cultivation, and education of Austin, with Kimura’s assured “if you build it, they will come” approach to creating a dedicated space for live performance. An upscale 21 and older lounge by night, the venue can also be rented out for private events during the week.

“Indeed, immaculate sound design, an electric stage curtain, a hi-fi video streaming studio, a comfy greenroom, incredible house gear, and a large framed photo of Kimura's late local mentor Tony Campise all speak to a new business that doesn't feel as much like a concept as it does somebody's dream,” said the Austin Chronicle.

Others in the industry rave about Kimura’s passion for excellence. “I don’t think I’ve ever known a musician to be so hands-on in opening a club,” said Doug Lawrence, featured tenor saxophone soloist with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra.

Parker Jazz Club in Austin, TX

What draws guests from far and wide is the club’s very own Parker Jazz Club House Band, led by Kimura. The band features Ryan Davis (piano), Ben Triesch (bass), Jeremy Bruch (drums), and Kimura (woodwinds/vocals), with veteran lighting and sound engineer Mac McDonnell. Kimura’s long-term ties to the local and national jazz community allows for a steady flow of notable acts. While always providing a neighborhood bar warmth and feel for their regular guests, Parker Jazz Club keeps the entertainment fresh and exciting.

“Cool, Hot, Classic, Timeless” — Parker Jazz Club is not only a music destination, it also features top-tier entertainment with an upscale lounge spin. They are introducing limited but deliberate food options to appeal to the “before” and “after dinner” clientele. The menu also includes local craft beers, a diverse craft cocktail menu, an extensive wine list, and a sophisticated focus on fine scotch and whiskey from around the world.

“There are rooms that cater to music and musicians —- however, very few rooms are designed and literally built for it,” said acclaimed Austin musician Alex Marrero. “Every microphone, cable, speaker, wire, baffle, table, and chair has been meticulously hand chosen for the purpose of serving the music. I have never seen anything like it in town for a room of that size. The reason is because it didn’t exist until Parker Jazz Club opened its doors.”

East Austin-based Modern Rocks Gallery announces a very exciting, new exhibition, “Fifty Years in Exile,” featuring a collection of rare, unseen and vintage photographs from The Rolling Stones’ 1972 session with legendary photographer Norman Seeff. This impressive exhibition will run from Aug. 19 - Sept. 30, 2022 with an Opening Reception on Friday, Aug. 19, 2022 at Modern Rocks, located at 916 Springdale Road, Canopy, Building 3 Austin, Texas 78702. “We’re absolutely thrilled to be hosting ‘Fifty Years In Exile,’” said Steven Walker, owner of Modern Rocks Gallery. “These original darkroom prints are testament to Norman Seeff’s greatness as both a photographer and an artist.”

While touring as the guitarist for Modern English, Modern Rocks Gallery Owner Steven Walker found himself documenting life on the road and thus discovered his love of photography. Following his touring days, Walker managed a highly successful gallery in London’s exclusive Chelsea neighborhood dealing with top international interior designers and continued to pursue his love of rock photography shooting bands around his hometown of London. Walker soon became a published photographer and amassed a wealth of experience in the world of rock ‘n’ roll, gallery management and rock photography. He had fallen in love with Austin while touring so it only made sense to combine his love for photography and Austin upon moving to the Live Music Capital of the World. Modern Rocks Gallery is the unique marriage of his life loves.

Walker was introduced to Norman Seeff a few years ago by Drew Evans of Rocks Photography Museum, an ongoing project that he is involved in. Seeff was a perfect addition to the Modern Rocks Gallery collection with his prints selling through the gallery to local interior designers and collectors alike.

After diving into his archive in his studio in Burbank, California, Norman Seeff came across some unseen treasures, a collection of rare photographs from his time working with The Rolling Stones and made a number of brand new prints specifically for the Fifty Years in Exile show. The prints were shown for the first time at the Rock Photography Museum in Los Angeles with the exhibition running through July 17, 2022. Starting on Aug. 19, 2022, they will be displayed at Modern Rocks Gallery in East Austin along with a stunning collection of Norman Seeff Vintage Prints, as well as some new pieces produced especially for the show. The perfect way to mark the 50th anniversary of Exile On Main St.

“I’ve always wanted to use my photography as source material for creating art pieces,” said Norman Seeff. “The photos serve as a jumping off point. I decided to use the exhibition as an opportunity to experiment. People have been very pleased with the results I think.”

East Austin-based Modern Rocks Gallery announces their latest exhibition, “David Bowie: Starman,” featuring a collection of rare David Bowie prints spanning the prolific artist’s career. The attendee with the best costume will win a framed Aladdin Sane print from Brian Duffy and the runner up will win a copy of the book “David Bowie Icon.” The opening reception is open to the public and attendees can RSVP here. For media who wish to attend, please RSVP here. To contact the gallery please call (512) 524-1488. For more information on Modern Rocks Gallery, please see here.

The prints on display throughout the exhibition include signed limited edition prints from Terry O’Neill’s “Diamond Dogs” album cover shoot, Justin De Villeneuve’s “Pin-Ups” album cover with British model Twiggy, Brian Duffy’s “Aladdin Sane” and “Scary Monsters” album cover shoots and Masayoshi Sukita’s famous session with Bowie for the “Heroes” album cover. The show also features early Bowie prints from Alec Byrne, Brian Aris and his early 1990s era prints, as well as later prints from Kevin Cummins, Jake Chessum, Markus Klinko and more.

“It’s hard to find anything to say that hasn’t been said before about David Bowie,” said Steven Walker, owner of Modern Rocks Gallery. “He was the most innovative, the most creative and easily the most enigmatic performers of our time, continually shapeshifting, reinventing, and pushing boundaries. He was a unique visionary and a true artist in every way. Bowie also understood the power of collaboration and the importance of the photographer as a crucial part of the puzzle when it came to sharing his vision. The prints on display have come direct from the photographers and show Bowie through the years, from the late 1960s through to Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, The Thin White Duke and beyond. It’s a remarkable collection that I’m proud to have pulled together. David Bowie: Starman is a must see for any Bowie fan, and if you’re not a fan yet, you will be after seeing his stunning visual journey.”

“Iconic photos of David Bowie, ‘Bowie-themed’ drinks and a costume contest…it doesn’t get much better than this,” said Tim Palmer.

Today, Indian-American, Austin-based singer and composer Nagavalli announces the release of her upcoming album “Numinosum,” slated for release on Friday, Feb. 10, 2023. To celebrate the new record, Nagavalli will be performing an official album release show on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Stateside Theatre at the Paramount located at 719 Congress Ave., Austin, TX 78701. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 8 p.m. Supporting Nagavalli on the bill is Americana folk-rock artist BettySoo, with more special guests to be announced soon. Tickets for the album release show range from $25 - $39 and are now on sale. To purchase advance tickets, please see here. For more information on Nagavalli, please see here.

“Numinosum” features Valli’s signature soulful sound which includes east-Indian melodies blending with pop, rock and other modern genres that have influenced her music. Many of the songs convey deep emotions and experiences, such as a yearning for profound human connection, optimism during times of grief, and freeing oneself from the burdens of labels and judgment. The record is dedicated to the father figures in Valli’s life, and the album is set to be released just after the anniversary of her father’s passing.

“The record is, in a way, a microcosm of my lived experience between the east and west at so many different levels and how these influences come together in my own songwriting and performing,” said

Nagavalli. “There are several original songs in English, a well-known invocation to Devi Durga (Aigiri Nandini), the divine feminine, an Eliza Gilkyson cover (Midnight Oil) that is very close to my heart and then some really popular covers from India and Pakistan (Damadam Mast Qalandar, Tere Bin Nahin Lagda).”

“Numinosum” was recorded at Blue Rock Artist Ranch & Studio in Wimberley, Texas. Nagavalli produced the record alongside her band member and friend, Katie Marie, while Blue Rock Studio’s Nathan Walters engineered the album and Isha Erskine, an award winning engineer from California, mixed and mastered “Numinosum” to its completion. The vocals for “Numinosum” were performed by Nagavalli, and Katie Marie contributed harmonies, acoustic/electric guitar, bass and drums. Matt Muehling played the electric guitar on most of the tracks on the record, Matt Read on acoustic guitar, with Jason McKenzie performing percussion, Indrajit Banerjee playing the sitar and surbahar, Indradeep Ghosh playing the violin, Oliver Rajamani on the sarod and Sheela Bringi playing the flute on the album.

“I am very proud to have signed up my friend, band member, multi-instrumentalist and producer Katie Marie to produce this album with me,” said Nagavalli. “There are so few female producers in the industry. For that reason too, I am proud of what she and I have accomplished on this album. This is also my first time recording at Blue Rock Studio in Wimberley, Texas and the space has yielded great results sonically.”

“Numinosum” also marks the first time Nagavalli has brought many of the songs she’s been performing and honed on stage to the recording studio, truly capturing her work over the last several years. Listeners will enjoy a blend of Indian instruments and scales layered on arrangements with bass, guitar and drums. The album also features serene sounds from the sitar, surbahar – a bass sitar, violin, flute and sarod as well as percussion driven by kanjira, doumbek, djembe and tabla.

“Nagavalli’s voice and spirit give me the depth of experience I long for in music and rarely reach,” said Eliza Gilkyson, renowned Austin-based folk musician.

Nagavalli’s last album project, “Immersion,” came out in January of 2019 with an unforgettable sold-out concert at the One World Theatre in Austin. Hartt Stearns, the Founder of One World Theatre, stated “Nagavalli is truly an amazing talent. Her concert was one of the most moving performances I have experienced at One World Theatre.”

Huge congrats to Asleep at the Wheel for their GRAMMY nomination for “Best Americana Performance” for their track “There You Go Again” featuring Lyle Lovett!

Written just before the recording of the band’s new album "Half a Hundred Years," "There You Go Again" is a feel-good, light-hearted jab at pretentiousness and all the silly ways it shows up in the writers’ lives, brought together with flourishes of fiddle and steel before crescendoing into a full-on New Orleans second line, walking back out the door as quickly as it came in.

“I suppose it’s a song about pretentious people!” says The Wheel’s fearless ringleader Ray Benson of their new song. “My pal Lyle Lovett, one of the most unpretentious people I know, joined in and made it a very special track.”

The final round for GRAMMY voting is open for Voting members of the Recording Academy, through Jan. 4, 2023. For more info on final round voting, see here.

Formerly known as Henry and The Invisibles, solo performer and skilled producer Henry Invisible (Henry Roland) announces his brand-new single “Ain’t Easy” dropping Friday, Feb. 3. “Ain’t Easy” is the first track from a collection of music the Austin legend has created over the last several years, introducing a fresh sound which fuses retro pop-rock influences with Roland’s signature groove rhythms. A staple in the funk scene locally and regionally, Henry Invisible is known as a multi-instrumentalist who single handedly loops and layers vocal harmonies, dynamic guitar riffs, bass grooves, soulful keyboards, drum machines and powerful percussion to create original, high-energy dance music that resembles a solid six-piece ensemble. Following the release of “Ain’t Easy” and various other singles slated for 2023, Roland plans to select the best tracks from his musical vault to create a full-length record by early next year. For more information on Henry Invisible, please see here. To purchase the new single on Feb. 3, see here.

Inspired by the challenges of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, Henry’s latest project aims to relay his musical journey over the last several years, promoting positivity and optimism, featuring a new-found vintage rock influenced sound. While in lockdown, Roland composed over 100 songs as a part of his weekly online livestream “The Love Stream,” created to encourage hope for the future and generate a supportive community. Each song in this collection, like the majority of his discography, was written, recorded, engineered and mastered by Henry himself in his home studio in Austin, TX.

“The inspiration comes from the pandemic experience that we all went through,” said Roland. “It was rough on so many. I lost many friends and family due to the dramatic changes in everyday life. I knew that I had to not only provide motivation and hope in my music, but also address the fear that we all felt during that vulnerable time. The culmination of those experiences most definitely attributed to my writing and outlook.”

Different from his previous works, Henry took a deeper approach to songwriting with his latest Bowie-esque single “Ain’t Easy.” Born out of uncertainty and hope for the future during the height of the pandemic, the song conveys what he and many others were feeling at the time, featuring a lively rhythm as well as an uplifting theme that Henry’s avid listeners will recognize and love. In a unique turn of events, “Ain’t Easy” was almost lost to the world before Roland uncovered it again years later.

“Earlier this year as I was cleaning out my studio, I decided to sell some gear and one of the items I would put up for sale was an extra loop pedal which had the function to also record my live ideas,” said Roland. “Before I sell anything, I always make sure that the gear is void of any of my original material. It was then that I saw one bank that had something recorded onto it. I pressed play and there was this song that I wrote, ‘Ain’t Easy.’ The original lyrics were free-styled and you could hear the absolute fear in the shakiness of my voice. I just remember feeling this warmth take over me as I listened to it from a different perspective, as a listener. I knew I had to release the song at the beginning of this year.”

As Henry Invisible embarks on this new release, inspired by hypnotic glam rock icons such as David Bowie, Elton John and Prince, he is also generating quite the buzz for himself in the production world through collaborations with other artists. You can hear Roland’s work on his funk hero Bootsy Collins’ “Stolen Dreams” from Collins’ 2020 record, “Power Of The One.” Henry appeared in a quick cameo in the video for the album’s title track as well. With many other production endeavors currently in the works, Roland is excited to continue advancing his role in this facet of the music industry during the months to come.

“This man will blow you off your feet so quickly that you’ll think you’re flying, and he is the sort of musician that not only makes you move but moves you,” said music licenser Nathalie Phan of On Vinyl Music. “The intimate relationship he has with his audience is absolutely unmatched in the live music scene.”
