Red House Records is proud to announce a new solo release, Ain't In No Hurry, by Jorma Kaukonen, set for release on February 17, 2015.  The album is a collection of classic American songs, blues, rockers and Jorma originals including a lost Woody Guthrie lyric set to music by Jorma and Larry Campbell. All tracks frame his life, development as an artist and where he stands today. Special guests include Jorma’s longtime Hot Tuna partner Jack Casady, mando wizard Barry Mitterhoff, Larry Campbell on all matter of strings, Teresa Williams on backing vocals, and the rhythm section of Myron Hart and Justin GuipJorma is currently on tour (scroll down for dates) and has announced tour dates through March 2015 that  include both solo and Hot Tuna shows.

In a career that has already spanned a half-century, Jorma remains one of the most highly respected interpreters of American roots music, blues, and Americana with a history that influenced popular rock-and-roll. A member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and a Grammy nominee as well as one of Rolling Stone's "Top 100 Guitarists of All Time," he is a founding member of two legendary bands, Jefferson Airplane and the still-touring Hot Tuna, and is recognized as one of the leading practitioners and teachers of finger-style guitar. Jorma’s renown goes far beyond his involvement creating psychedelic rock; he is a music legend and one of the finest singer-songwriters in music. He's also an avid motorcyclist, a gallery owner (the Psylodelic Gallery, dedicated to the arts and culture of the 1960s arts) and co-owner of the Fur Peace Ranch, an Ohio-based concert venue and guitar center where Jorma conducts workshops, bringing in such guitar masters as G.E. Smith and Larry Campbell.

The 11 tracks on Ain't In No Hurry show Jorma at the top of his game. Playing with a confidence and touch that come from a lifetime spent writing and performing, he delivers a batch of  originals that already sound like classics, interspersed with soulful interpretations of songs by the Carter Family and more. He includes a weighty version of the Depression Era classic, "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" and ends the album with a solo acoustic original number, "Seasons in the Field," a look at the seasons of one's life, the passing of time and the loss of youth.

“You just can’t go backward. The arrow of time only goes in one direction," says Jorma. "At this point in my life perhaps I should be in more of a hurry, but for me it's more important that each piece fits in the right place at the right time. The songs you hear in this album cover a lot of ground for me. Some are very old, and some quite new. From where I came from to where I am today... it is all here. Music does not happen in a vacuum. The orbit of my life is constantly tangential to others and I am richer for it. I am surrounded by friends who help give voice to my dream."

What comes through is Jorma's ability to tell a story and the lifetime of experiences he brings to play. The DC native was a devotee of rock-and-roll in the Buddy Holly era but soon developed a love for the blues and bluegrass that were profuse in the clubs and concerts in the nation’s capitol and discovering albums by the Carter Family and the Louvin Brothers.  This raw, American music inspired him to take up the guitar and make that kind of music himself. Soon he met fellow DC musician Jack Casady, the younger brother of a friend and a guitar player in his own right. Though they could not have known it, they were beginning a musical partnership that has continued for over 50 years.

Jorma graduated from high school and headed off for Antioch College in Ohio, where he met Ian Buchanan, who introduced him to the elaborate fingerstyle fretwork of the Rev. Gary Davis. A work-study program in New York introduced the increasingly skilled guitarist to that city’s burgeoning folk-blues-bluegrass scene and many of its players. After a break from college and travel overseas, Jorma returned to the States and spent the summer of 1962 working in a service station. He spent his weekends going to the many Bluegrass festivals that existed in the area at the time, seeing Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, The Foggy Mountain Boys, The Country Gentlemen and more. That fall he enrolled at the University of Santa Clara, 50  miles south of San Francisco.

"The first weekend I was there I played a hoot at the Folk Theater in San Jose. That night, I met Janis Joplin, Richmond Talbott, Jerry Garcia, Pig Pen, Paul Kantner and a host of others whose names would be more recognizable in the coming years," Jorma recalls.  "Paul would introduce me to the gaggle of characters who would become Jefferson Airplane, Jack Casady would join us from D.C. and the rest truly became history. I owe that cast of luminous characters a huge debt of gratitude for starting my train rolling in such a momentous way. While Jorma was in the Jefferson Airplane the band performed at three of the most famous American rock festivals of the 1960s: Monterey (1967), Woodstock (1969) and Altamont (1969) as well as headlining the first Isle of Wight Festival in the UK in 1968. Jorma left the band during their heyday, forming Hot Tuna with Jack Casady to play stripped down acoustic blues and folk music.
"As a result, I have been more than a decently rewarded folk musician for more than half a century,"  he says.

In addition to his work with Hot Tuna, Jorma has recorded more than a dozen solo albums on major labels beginning with 1974’s Quah and continuing with his recent acoustic releases on Red House Records—2007’s Stars in My Crown and 2009's River of Time, produced by Larry Campbell and featuring Levon Helm.

"I never really thought about it when I was younger, but my choice of songs was always an effort to tell my story," he explains. "Sometimes they were about things that happened, and sometimes they were about things that never happened, sometimes they were about things I wanted to happen, sometimes they were about things I feared would happen... sometimes... there was always a sometimes. Learning to play guitar was the gift that enabled me to set the story to music."

Jorma Kaukonen is constantly looking to take his musical horizons further still, always moving forward, always infusing his classic sound with fresh insights and the depth that comes with a lifetime as a performer.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jorma Kaukonen is premiering his new album, Ain't In No Hurry, this week at NPR Folk Alley's as their "Hear It Now" selection. "I believe music is in the DNA of our souls. No matter what kind of music one likes, one has to have it," Jorma says. "You might have a favorite period, a favorite genre, but it never gets old and there is always something new to set you on fire.

This new version features Jorma's Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna bandmate and longtime collaborator, bassist Jack Casady.  Ain’t in No Hurry is available for pre-order now on iTunes and Amazon. Jorma is currently on tour (scroll down for dates) and has announced 2015 tour dates that include both solo and Hot Tuna shows as well as an appearance at SxSW (scroll down for complete dates).

On June 23, two of the most in-demand artists in roots music, Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, will take center stage with their self-titled debut album on Red House Records. After decades of marriage and seven years working closely with Levon Helm - Campbell as bandleader and producer (winning three Grammys for his work) and wife Williams as singer - their first album together features eight originals and three covers honed at Helm's legendary Midnight Rambles.

"It was the most pure musical experience I've ever had," Campbell says of their time with Helm. "It gave me the template for how to make music for the rest of my life: no egos, no agenda, no petty stuff. I got inspired to write more songs for Teresa and me to sing."

After Levon’s 2012 passing, they grieved, celebrated his life, and got to work finishing "Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams." They had the tunes, and, with drummer (and ace recording engineer) Justin Guip and Ramble Band member Byron Isaacs on bass, they had an ass-kicking, road-worthy band. Additionally, the lovefest of guests on Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams sweetened the pot considerably: Amy Helm’s voice melding with Larry and Teresa’s on the gorgeous Grateful Dead hymn “Attics Of My Life,” Little Feat keyboardist Bill Payne’s rollicking touch on several tracks, and Levon himself appearing on “You’re Running Wild,” a tune made famous by the Louvin Brothers, now given an Orbison touch (originally recorded during Levon’s Dirt Farmer sessions). Finally, it all dovetailed into place.

In addition to Helm, Campbell and Williams have played with a Who's Who of Music Icons: Bob Dylan (Rolling Stone called Larry's eight-year tenure "the greatest period of the Never Ending Tour"), Paul Simon, Phil Lesh, Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow, Keith Richards, Cyndi Lauper, Hot Tuna and Mavis Staples. In addition to his Grammy wins with Helm, Campbell has won the Lifetime Achievement Award (2008) and Instrumentalist of the Year Award (2013) from the Americana Music Association.

With Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, this duo not only brings a lot to the table, they bring the table itself – plus the house, the still, the church, the marriage bed, the sawdust-covered floor, and abiding, unconditional love, all carried in two voices harmonizing across hills, hollers, porches, and fire escapes. Those close harmonies ride atop music made in a mountain refuge, far from the madding crowd, connected to a spirit that lives on in song.

Campbell and Williams will tour the country this spring and summer, including two New York shows before album release (4/8 at Rockwood and 5/18 at City Winery) and a two-day stand at Phil Lesh's Terrapin Crossroads in San Francisco (6/18-9). See current dates below (more TBA).

This is the third release by husband-and-wife duo of guitarist Chris Masterson and string player Eleanor Whitmore, described as “Tift Merritt fronting the Jayhawks” (Esquire Magazine).  Written on the road, usually during late-night sessions, Transient Lullaby is darker than their previous two album and has a wistful, longing feel. Musically, it’s rich with intoxicating harmonies that float above Whitmore’s stirring string arrangements and Masterson’s adroit guitar work, but it’s the deeply personal songwriting that always manages to steal the show.

Full of characters facing down difficulty and darkness with all the grit and humility they can muster, Transient Lullaby is an unfiltered and timeless portrait of all the joy and pain love can bring, though it's not without its political moments, too. The Mastersons found themselves on tour in Lexington, KY, during the height of Kim Davis' obstinate stand against the Supreme Court's same sex marriage decision, and so they penned the infectious "You Could Be Wrong" in a dressing room before taking the stage with "Love Wins" draped across their guitars.

Transient Lullaby follows the band's 2014 release, Good Luck Charm—which was premiered by the NY Times and praised by Mother Jones for its "big-hearted lyrics, tight song structures, and sweetly intertwined harmonies"—and their 2012 debut, Birds Fly South, which was awarded 9/10 stars by Uncut. Those albums earned The Mastersons slots on NPR’s Mountain Stage and at festivals around the world, from San Francisco's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass to Australia's Byron Bay Bluesfest. For additional info and tour dates go to http://www.themastersonsmusic.com.

You can catch The Mastersons at the Boulder Theater on August 4th.

Fans of top-notch musicianship and bluesy roots music take note: The David Bromberg Quintet will be joined by Grammy-nominated duo Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley for two weeks of tour dates in the Southeast kicking off February 16, 2022 in Charlottesville, VA. Bromberg's most recent album is the critically lauded BIG ROAD, which was acclaimed by Forbes, Relix and American Songwriter among others and prompted No Depression to write, “He [Bromberg] has always dived right into melodic and lyrical structures that are older than America and treated them all equally. By doing this, he communicates something that few outside of Bob Dylan or The Grateful Dead have ever succeeded at: He reflects roots music in all of its divergent pathways back to his listeners and allows it to stand on its own without judgment or apology. Big Road is a truly masterful work.” Bromberg and his band are on tour now; more info at https://davidbromberg.net.
