Galactic is not just a band. They are a community. They are a party. They are a movement and a force that comes to town to bring an awakening or awareness that is deeply entrenched in a carnival type New Orleans experience. With Mardi Gras at our heels, Denver was still feeling the holiday spirit, and the circus was in town. I call Galactic a community because I have never really seen a band with more of an open family type jam spirit that welcomes so many different types of musicians depending on their latest albums or motives.

The greatest thing about The Travelin' McCourys, or Del’s Boys, is that they are so open to collaboration. They were bread in a family of musical versatility that never limited any possibility if they could do something interesting.

The Heavy Pets have announced round two of their Spring Tour 2014, which kicks off next weekend in California with two nights at the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco supporting Galactic. Then it's back to the East Coast for a stacked extended run that includes shows with Umphrey’s McGee, The Werks, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, American Babies, Jimkata and more.

Denver’s Fox Street have announced a return to their favorite part of the country in March and April with shows across the Southeast including Texas, Louisiana and Florida (where the band will be a headliner for Biscuit Fest in Boca Raton, FL). The mini-Southeast tour follows an ambitious Winter 2014 tour which included a packed January show at Denver’s Bluebird Theatre and significant growth in numerous national markets.

It’s felt like eons since David “Dawg” Grisman has played in Boulder. Not that is really been all too long, but since then residents have all sorts of jammy and traditional grass growing underneath them. Theater performances and community picks become increasingly popular and plentiful. A sort of roots resurgence has blossomed and a generation of newgrass players is inheriting while reinventing this tradition. Purists need to a look back a few generations to what Dawg music did for what was then current in bluegrass.

After a great interview on Valentine’s Day with probably the best blues Americana musician alive, it was my pleasure to see him perform at the Boulder Theater. As I approached the theater, I noticed that there were a lot of people looking for extra tickets. I should not have been surprised, but the show was very sold out.

Over the course of his 20-year career, drummer Stanton Moore has become known as one of the premier funk musicians of his generation. On his latest album Conversations, due April 15 from The Royal Potato Family, he moves in a slightly different direction, returning to his roots while reinventing his trademark sound.

Kung Fu has released their highly anticipated sophomore album, Tsar Bomba, featuring 12 original songs including fan favorites “Do The Right Thing,” “Hollywood Kisses,” and “Snaggle.” The band took their time on this album, recording it slowly over 18 months at Gold Coast studios and the result is a perfect example of their unique sonic contribution to the music scene. Blurring the lines between electro-jazz-fusion and ‘70s-style street fighter funk, Tsar Bomba captures the band’s musical prowess with a delightful sense of creativity and musicianship.
