Academy Award-nominated “king of indie animation” Bill Plympton takes viewers on a Technicolor ride to outer space, an underwater world filled with robots, and a concert performed by banjo-slinging aliens in the new video for roots-rocker Jackie Greene’s “Modern Lives."

Set to absurdist lyrics comparing Times Square to a graveyard and a rollicking, fiddle-heavy groove, the seemingly innocuous psychedelic visuals take on a darkly sardonic meaning and reflect the dystopia Greene sees when he looks at “this modern life.”

His long awaited new full length, Spacedust & Ocean Views, offers up graceful songwriting and signature guitar work on one of the strongest releases in his storied career. A strong sense of place runs through the album.

In a time where the music industry is topsy-turvy, we need artists like Karl Denson more than ever. The multifarious Denson fares innately in different genres, as bandleader or sideman, and paid his dues as a touring musician that came into his own. The San Diego based saxophonist first gained recognition as a member of Lenny Kravitz and quickly soon after broke through in the A-list jazz circuit. His ambitious bop-oriented Chunky Pecan Pie (1994) featured an impressive supporting lineup of Jack DeJohnette & Dave Holland.

“You’re damn right I got the blues,” Buddy Guy sang out as he opened his headlining set at the annual Russian River Jazz and Blues Festival in fiery northern California on Sept. 13. While the so-called 73,000-acre Valley Fire, which burned more than 500 homes, raged as close as 30 miles away, the two-day festival site at Johnson’s Beach on the Russian River in the small, Bohemian town of Guerneville, California, was smoke-free.
