The Duhks Return with Fast Paced World

The Duhks- for the Grateful Web

Hailed by the New York Times as one of the artists at the forefront of the neo-folk movement, the Duhks continue the evolution with their fourth album, 'Fast Paced World,' (August 12th / Sugar Hill Records). "We traveled from Winnipeg, locked ourselves in a Nashville basement, pooled our ideas together and invented a new sound," says new frontwoman and bilingual, budding soul queen, Sarah Dugas (she replaced Jessee Havey in 2007).

Produced by Jay Joyce, who joins an impressive line of producers (Béla Fleck, Tim O'Brien) before him, the Duhks have created their most energetic, fully realized, unearthly album to date.   Seriously. "Jay's basement studio was like something out of the Star Trek Enterprise," adds founder and clawhammer banjoist, Leonard Podolak, who, in the past, "traditionally stuck close to the acoustic sound of our instruments.   This record is a beautiful mosaic of different ideas and soundscapes."

Leonard, Sarah, Tania Elizabeth (fiddle, mandolin), guitarist Jordan McConnell and new worldbeat drummer Christian Dugas (Sarah's brother) have melded French lounge pop ("Toujours Vouloir") and scratchy soul meditations on the Galveston flood in 1900 ("Mighty Storm") and sleeping ("Sleepin' Is All I Wanna Do") with the soundtrack of the weirdest 1930s Marlene Dietrich movie you never saw ("This Fall"), and beyond.    "We're all proud of this record and can't wait to release it to the world," adds Sarah.

In the space between the Grammy-nominated 'Migrations' (2006, Sugar Hill Records) and now, the Juno-winning band has gained critical love ("overall virtuosity that could make them stars" - Boston Globe), toured the world and earned a solid fan base - no doubt due to their manic, spirited live shows. (Check YouTube for John Paul Jones joining the band for "Whole Lotta Love").

Environmental issues have always been a passion for the band, inspiring them to launch The Duhks Sustainability Project (www.greenduhks.com).

The goal is to "tour as sustainably as possible - Biodiesel, local organic farmers, sustainable eco-conscious clothing," says Tania, who was invited by Bonnaroo to speak about sustainability during the festival on June 13th.    In addition, Bonnaroo has chosen the Duhks to perform on the Solar Stage on June 14th.

Colorado Music Association Presents Kai Eckhardt Bass Clinic

Photo courtesy of Tsunami Publicity- for the Grateful Web

Bassist Extraordinare Kai Eckhardt, along with the Colorado Music Association, will be hosting a unique day long clinic in Denver with the legendary virtuoso. Known primarily for his work with jazz funksters Garaj Mahal and fusion guitarist John McLaughlin, Eckhardt has established himself as one of the premier bassists in the music industry. Creating a style melding worldly flair with scorching fretwork and exotic rhythms, Kai Eckhardt blazes a trail of originality.

For the clinic, Eckhardt's teachings will concentrate on the Konokol method. The Indian method of Konokol teaches the fundamentals of rhythm through the use of spoken syllables and hand motions, without the use of drums or other percussive devices. Also featured will by Kai's Symmetrical Approach to melody and harmony. Using this approach, Eckhardt creates an entirely new piece of music from completely random selections. Incorporating elements of the polyrhythmic matrix, he will demonstrate how this method works for rhythm.

Musicians across the musical spectrum, from drummers to vocalists to horn players, can benefit from Kai's teachings. In addition to musical growth, Eckhardt's clinics also contribute to inner development and inspiration. "It is my desire to teach people how to invent and reinvent themselves by paying close attention to the underlying principles that make us learn. During my clinic, I will be open to any sincere question and I will do my best to help the student unblock, trouble shoot, align and get inspired," says Eckhardt.

In order to facilitate the learning process, Kai Eckhardt will feature a series of graphs and illustrations, along with original compositions accompanied with lyrics and groove loops. The clinic will take place Sunday, May 18th at 10:00AM at the intersection of Colfax and Lafayette in Denver. Cost for the day long seminar is $60.00.

EOTO Wraps Up Spring 2008 Tour

photos by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

EOTO (pronounced E-oh-toe) featuring Jason Hann and Michael Travis of String Cheese Incident fame are wrapping up a string of dates taking them from the east coast throughout the Midwest. The project has eagerly taken to the road with an entirely unique and completely refreshing experience.

Stepping outside of the String Cheese box entirely, the duo delivers monster bass, hypnotic beats and intoxicating melodies in a totally unrehearsed, unscripted dance party, unleashing diverse performances night in and night out. In the world of EOTO, nothing is pre-recorded, nothing is pre-looped, no sets are pre-planned and the crowd feels it. Each night transports the listener to a different place and a different time.

Drawing from the ethos of some of the great DJ's and computer artists of the world, they use cutting edge technology to create truly original and melodic dance music in the moment with the undeniable power of live drums. The music is all created on the spot, recorded, then mixed and remixed live to create an ever-evolving musical experience.

Playing roles completely different than they did in SCI, Jason Hann commands the drum kit, all percussion and samples. Michael Travis creates the tonal ambiance through the use of the bass, guitar, keyboards, and hand percussion, all while throwing down the live mixing. While completely different from SCI, life-long fans as well as new fans will be drawn to the spontaneity that is EOTO.

Landreth taps Clapton & Knopfler on new album

Sonny Landreth- for the Grateful Web

Louisiana-based singer/songwriter/slide-guitar monster Sonny Landreth will release his ninth album, titled From The Reach and his first on his own Landfall Records label (distributed by Ryko Distribution), on May 20. On it, Landreth does something unprecedented in his body of work as he collaborates with five of the greatest guitar players on the planet — Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson and Vince Gill — in some jaw-dropping performances. Also making appearances are the legendary New Orleans pianist and singer Dr. John and Margaritaville's iconic troubadour Jimmy Buffett.

"I've been wanting to make this kind of record for a long time —– to do an entire album that would feature some of my favorite players as special guests," says Landreth. "The other thing was how to do it without being yet another clichéd 'duets' album. Then I got the idea to write the songs specifically for each of the artists and that was the real hook for me, as a writer as well as a guitar player."

On the opener, "Blue Tarp Blues,' Sonny exchanges solos with Knopfler, and the aural contrast between Sonny's shimmering slide and the Dire Straits leader's biting Strat is a textural treat. Clapton appears to cut loose on "When I Still had You," adding his soulful voice to the choruses as well. Slowhand then wails on "Storm of Worry," a spooky slow blues reminiscent of his Bluesbreakers era.

"The Milky Way Home" is a powerful instrumental rocker that features Eric Johnson on delectably distorted guitar passages that morph into his trademark cello-like sound. "The Goin' On" shifts into a country-rock groove, with Vince Gill and Sonny alternating between guitar solos and lead vocals. Robben Ford brings his extraordinary tone and phrasing to "Way Past Long" and "Blue Angel" (the latter with Gill on backing vocals), as Landreth swaps his trusty Strat for a Les Paul. Each of these performances is an extraordinary showcase of brilliant players reacting to each other in supremely inspired fashion.

In one of two delightful changes of pace to the album's six-string focus, Dr. John brings the requisite gris-gris to "Howlin' Moon" with his trademark rollicking piano and harmonies, and he's joined on the track by Jimmy Buffett. "Although the idea of the record was playing with my guitar heroes, I wanted to open to the unexpected as well," Landreth explains. "I'd written 'Howlin' Moon' a long time ago and I'd always had Dr. John in mind for it. Then we took it a step further with Jimmy's vocal and the vibe was perfect."

As for the intriguing album title, "I thought about it a lot," he says. "One of the most interesting things to me in the songwriting process is letting it cook and bubble and see what comes up to the top. As I was writing these songs, the word 'reach' kept coming up and 'reach' is a pretty powerful word. Aside from the obvious meaning, it can refer to a body of water. And the water imagery kept coming throughout the writing of these songs as well, so it's like this is what came up out of this whole project for me. What would happen if I invited all these people: where would this take me. I literally reached out to them, and they graciously came on board. Then there was the impact locally of Katrina. So the title is the result of all of the above. It's coming from an honest place."

The same could be said of everything this one-of-a-kind artist has done in his single-minded career.

This spring and summer, Landreth will perform at the following festivals: Houston International Festival, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Festival Internationale de Louisiana, Metro Fountain Blues Festival in San Jose, Tropical Heatwave in Tampa, Blues Brews and BBQ Festival in Charleston WV, Cisco Systems Blues Festival Ottawa, Montreal Jazz Festival. Belleville American Music Festival in Wisconsin, Calgary Folk Festival, Blues On The Green in Austin and the Chenango (NY) Blues Festival.

Colorado-based spinster DJ Goodfoot and Turn It Out Productions announce a music release party dubbed "Welcome To The Candy Shoppe".

The gathering will take place in Denver on Tuesday May 20th at the Sugar House (www.sugarhouselounge.com), located at the corner of Alameda Ave. and Pecos.  Also performing throughout the evening will be Razor FM and Jasun Lovejoy w/special guests.
