Sweetwater Music Hall has always occupied sacred ground in the Bay Area’s extended Grateful Dead universe. Since its founding in 1972, the Mill Valley nonprofit venue has served as a gathering place for jam bands, bluegrass pickers, roots traditionalists, and free-spirited musicians carrying forward the hippie-era ethos of community, improvisation, and musical exploration.
That lineage is especially alive in Sweetwater’s February and March calendar, which leans heavily into Grateful Dead-adjacent sounds, jam collectives, Garcia tributes, bluegrass, reggae, and soul-rooted music—alongside a wide-ranging slate that reflects the hall’s all-genres mission.
Highlights for Deadheads and heads of all stripes include the China Camp Family Band digging deep into the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia catalog, the powerhouse supergroup Skeleton Crewe featuring Barry Sless, Rob Barraco, Pete Sears, and Jay Lane, and the ever-reliable Wicked Messengers channeling Jerry Garcia and Bob Dylan. Jam-friendly mainstays like New Monsoon, The Crosby Collective, and the extended Grisman family celebration further anchor the schedule in Sweetwater tradition.
