Clay Street Unit Releases Debut Album, ‘Sin & Squalor’

Today, Colorado-based roots sextet Clay Street Unit releases their long-awaited debut album Sin & Squalor via their new label home in Leo33. Produced by Chris Pandolfi of the innovative Grammy-winning group The Infamous Stringdusters, Sin & Squalor captures the spirit of the West, the folk and country traditions of the South, and the verve of modern Americana. On the heels of the release, Clay Street Unit will make their Grand Ole Opry debut on February 17th. Performing on the Opry stage is major milestone for a band whose music bridges generations of American roots tradition while carving out a modern, high-energy identity of its own.

A standout on Sin & Squalor is the track “Left Unsaid.” The narrator turns inward, exploring the quiet tension that builds when vulnerability goes unspoken. Anchored by Sam Walker’s soulful vocals, the emotionally direct songwriting, with a restrained, pulsing arrangement, reflects on commitment, self-awareness, and choosing to stay even when things feel complicated. “Left Unsaid” captures the fragile space between honesty and hope. Yesterday, Holler Country premiered the track “Virginia,” an upbeat, banjo- and mandolin-driven ode to homesickness and the magnetic pull of home. Written as a love letter to the Blue Ridge, the song balances joyful momentum with deep longing.

Formed in Denver in 2021, the group’s 2022 debut EP, A Mighty Fine Evening, introduced their genre-blending sound as Clay Street Unit worked tirelessly to galvanize their live performances. The band played around the Denver and Colorado music scenes before hitting the road from coast to coast, which garnered a passionate community of fans, which continues to expand rapidly.

From vivid storytelling to exceptional musicianship, Sin & Squalor is the sound of a band hitting its stride. The balance between joy and hardship and sin and salvation lie at the heart of their songwriting.

Clay Street Unit is Sam Walker (lead vocals/guitar), Scottie Bolin (mandolin/vocals), Jack Cline (banjo), Brad Larrison (pedal steel), Brendan Lamb (drums), Jack Kotarba (bass), as well as new touring member Dan Andree (fiddle). With band members originating in Montgomery, AL, Charlottesville, VA, Atlanta, GA, Philadelphia, PA, Denver, CO and Washington DC, their diverse backgrounds and influences come together to shape their signature style. A style that is fresh yet timeless and fully realized on Sin & Squalor.
