Today, Nashville-based singer-songwriter, Aubrie Sellers, released her third studio album, Attachment Theory. Born out of heartbreak, the gritty new concept album expands Sellers’ sound with 11 brooding and brilliant rock-leaning songs that delve into the psychology of human relationships. Out now on Casual Records | Carnival Records, listen to Attachment Theory HERE.
Following her recent performance at The Grand Ole Opry, Sellers kicks off a headline tour alongside Jade Jackson this April, with stops in Nashville, Austin, Atlanta, and more. Tickets are on sale now – see full dates below and see here for more information.
Also out today is the visualizer for the most outright up-tempo rocker on the LP, “Trigger Happy,” which Sellers is performing on The Kelly Clarkson Show this afternoon. Watch HERE.
“The song is about dealing with someone who can’t handle intimacy without getting triggered and taking it out on you,” shares Sellers. “Sometimes that comes from a subconscious place, but other times it feels like they’re actively avoiding the truth of their own triggers. [Producer Ethan Ballinger] referenced Weezer on this one, and we went for that feeling of emotional free-fall and chaos.”
Arguably her best album yet, Attachment Theory is darker, edgier, and full of hard-won wisdom from bracing through the hellscape of modern dating. In addition to the previously released singles, like the playful honky-tonk “Little Rooms” and the dreamy yet haunting tune “Delusional” ft. Ashley Monroe, other standouts include the titular track, “Attachment Theory,” which is a hazy Kurt Vile-esque song about overcoming attachment struggles and breaking generational cycles. Meanwhile, songs like the ethereal “Subatomic” and the introspective “Prototype” examine the ways we internalize criticism and the need to build ourselves up again.
Says Sellers, “This record was born out of heartbreak, with the theme of attachment theory running through it in different ways. I’ve always been fascinated by psychology, especially people’s personalities and quirks and how they function in relationships.” She continues, “Sonically, this record leans even more into rock than my past albums, but it has a darker, slower cadence. Less outright slashers and more intense rock slow-burners. I’m drawn to sci-fi, horror, and cinematic themes, and you hear that all over this record with the synths, strings, and haunting guitars. Ethan Ballinger, who co-produced and played guitar, and Jeremy Ferguson, our engineer, share those sensibilities with me.”
Released in tandem with the album is Attachment Theory: The Podcast, where each episode feels like a deep, honest conversation with a friend. Sellers invites listeners into her world, sharing insights and perspectives that aim not only to illuminate the themes within the album but also offer practical advice and wisdom for navigating their own relationships and personal growth. Through candid storytelling and heartfelt explorations, listeners can gain a deeper understanding of the profound impact that relationships have on our lives. At the end of each episode, listeners can hear the song that inspired the subject. New episodes are released every two weeks – listen to the new episode “Trigger Happy” and the previous episodes here.
