Phil Sargent Explores Intimacy, Counterpoint, and Inner Stillness on Solo Motions
Some records ask for attention. Others ask for quiet. Solo Motions, the forthcoming solo guitar album from Phil Sargent, belongs to the latter—less a showcase of technique than an invitation into stillness. Arriving May 1, 2026, the album reimagines jazz standards and one original composition through the lens of classical counterpoint, chromatic harmony, and improvisation, capturing the guitar as a complete, breathing ensemble.
Built entirely around unaccompanied guitar, the project reflects years of study—from Bach’s contrapuntal language to the harmonic depth of Ben Monder, Shostakovich, and Charles Ives—filtered through a deeply personal lens.
The album gained momentum through a global community of solo guitarists, helping shape arrangements like “There Will Never Be Another You,” where multiple melodic voices unfold within a single instrument. Across the record, Sargent balances clarity and complexity, allowing familiar melodies to evolve through layered phrasing and improvisation.
One of the most striking moments arrives with “Hurt,” inspired in part by Albert Camus’ The Plague, where isolation and introspection are translated into sound—fragile, deliberate, and deeply human.
At its core, Solo Motions is grounded in presence. Shaped by Sargent’s personal life and sense of reflection, the album leans into patience, restraint, and emotional honesty—perhaps most clearly on “Kelita,” his lone original composition.
Solo Motions will be released May 1, 2026.
The first single, “Hurt,” arrived February 20, with “There Will Never Be Another You” following March 27.
