Among the many poetic and adventurous songs in the Grateful Dead catalog, “Cassidy” remains a favorite, and last night in Arkansas, Greensky Bluegrass gave the Bob Weir classic a fresh spin of their own.

During their April 19 performance at The Majestic in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the beloved bluegrass-Americana outfit dropped “Cassidy” late in the second set, weaving the song’s familiar melodic turns through their high-octane string band framework. For Deadheads and Greensky faithful alike, it was one of those crossover moments where two musical worlds meet naturally.

Greensky Bluegrass has never shied away from honoring the broader American roots songbook, and “Cassidy” fits the band’s adventurous spirit perfectly. Originally written by Bob Weir and John Perry Barlow, the song has long been a vehicle for improvisation, emotional lift, and lyrical depth — all qualities that translate well to Greensky’s dynamic live approach.

The performance comes during a busy season for the band. Earlier this month, Greensky released the documentary film Find Ourselves Lost, The Iceland Sessions, which captures the making of 2024’s The Iceland Sessions in rural North Iceland, following the group’s creative process, struggles, and triumphs.

The documentary arrives on the heels of an extensive winter and spring tour, as well as the release of their acclaimed album XXV, a retrospective project celebrating the band’s storied career. The collection features contributions from bluegrass and Americana standouts including Nathaniel Rateliff, Billy Strings, Sam Bush, Aoife O'Donovan, and more.

For Grateful Dead fans, it’s always worth noting when younger generations continue carrying these songs into new rooms and new sounds. Last night in Fort Smith, “Cassidy” kept rolling on.
