NYC songwriter Eric Gabriel returns with Lucky Day Roadrunner, arriving May 1, a record that oscillates effortlessly between soft funk and off-kilter indie pop bliss. Brimming with introspective lyrics, sticky melodies, and soulful grooves, the album carves out a sound entirely his own—one that recalls Sam Evian while evoking the spirit of Prince, Bill Withers, Joni Mitchell, and John Prine.
Produced by Philip Weinrobe and featuring an all-star band, Lucky Day Roadrunner has already drawn praise from FLOOD, MAGNET, and Atwood Magazine, with the latter calling it “a quirky, soulful slow-burn that finds its footing in smoldering guitar licks, warm keys, and a vocal performance that feels both loose and locked in, following its own easy, unbothered stride.”
Today, Gabriel shares “Night After Night,” the third and final preview ahead of the album’s release. A deep sadness covered by a magnetic pulse, the song explores what it means to have love and hope go unfulfilled again and again.
On a day off from tour in Phoenix, Arizona, a curious stranger gestured toward Eric Gabriel from across the street. Following her gaze, he spotted a roadrunner perched on a curb. “It must be your lucky day,” she said. That fleeting moment became the seed for *Lucky Day Roadrunner*, a record shaped by the unexpected connections found when you slow down and pay attention. What began as a solitary walk in an unfamiliar city turned into a shared experience—and ultimately, the emotional foundation of the album.
Compared to his first solo record, Samara (2025), the new album feels looser and less restrained, embracing rough edges and unpredictability. Full of twists and turns, dive bars and long drives, *Lucky Day Roadrunner* presents a cast of characters caught somewhere between misfortune and hope. The songs move between truth and fantasy, childhood memory and present reflection, vulnerability and humor, woven together into a collection of stories marked by light cynicism and bittersweet nostalgia.
Mirroring that wandering spirit, the album was recorded live in January 2025 at producer Philip Weinrobe’s Brooklyn basement studio, Sugar Mountain. Rejecting headphones, click tracks, and isolation, Gabriel and his collaborators gathered close together and captured the record in real time. The arrangements were built in the room, trusting instinct over perfection, and what was played is what you hear, with minimal additions afterward.
The result is a tight band that still feels loose and free, music that could shift and evolve every time it’s played. The album features an all-star cast including Meg Duffy (Hand Habits, Perfume Genius), Adam Brisbin (Big Thief, Billie Marten), Sean Mullins (Hannah Cohen, Sam Evian), Dandy McDowell (Amen Dunes, Rubblebucket), and Eric Gabriel himself. The exploratory nature of the sessions shines through in moments like “Watch On,” where each member swaps instruments for synths, and “Teeth Bones Poems,” a seven-minute track recorded in darkness, incorporating live-sampled sounds as the performance unfolded.
Lucky Day Roadrunner arrives May 1, with an album release show set for June 6 at Union Pool in New York City.
