Today, the Athens, GA-born Futurebirds released their new single “Fly On” from their first-ever double album, Far Out Country, which will be released on June 5 via Dualtone Records. Written by singer/guitarist Carter King, “Fly On” is a reflection on the spiritual clarity that comes with appreciating the quiet beauty of the world around us, if we can get out of our own way long enough to savor it.

About the new single, Carter King explains:

This song was born on the porch in the morning watching birds, drinking coffee, and thinking about all the things constantly migrating through our figurative yards. I was trying to get out of my own way so I could appreciate it. Easier said. Sometimes the memory of feeling connects you to all those things in your life better than the scratchy movies you play in your mind. How the first warm day of spring will zap you to one, or many very specific places in time — the visions are blurry, but the feeling is fresh as the moment you were there. There’s a quote by Thomas Carlyle that was on my mind that morning, ‘Strange enough how creatures of the human-kind shut their eyes to plainest facts; and by the mere inertia of Oblivion and Stupidity, live at ease in the midst of Wonders and Terrors.’ Or as Insane Clown Posse put it, ‘If magic is all we've ever known / Then it's easy to miss what really goes on… Stop and look around, it's all astounding / Water, fire, air and dirt / F*cking magnets, how do they work?!’ It’s real easy to get wrapped up in our own anxieties and slowly grow apathetic while ICP-level magic flies by us. But if we can just get out of our own way for a minute, the world and all its little miracles are out there in the yard, ready to blow our biscuits.”

Last month, Futurebirds released the Sienna Life EP, featuring three songs from Far Out Country I — “Sienna Life,” “Sleepless in the Cage,” and “Ghost Moon.” The release and double album announcement were met with praise from Brooklyn Vegan, Relix, and Stereogum, among others, who noted that Far Out Country “is both a title and a mission statement.” In a rare physical-first approach, the band will release the full project as a double vinyl on June 5, with the second half of the album arriving on streaming platforms months later, making vinyl the only way to experience the complete record early.

Fronted by three distinct singer-songwriters — Daniel “Womz” Womack, Carter King, and Thomas “Tojo” Johnson — the band writes in conversation, their voices shaped by a shared history but divergent perspectives. Across 18 songs, Far Out Country unfolds like an honest dialogue about their transition to fathers and family men navigating the tension between the road that made them and their lives back home.

“If you spend your present moment too wrapped up in the future, or the past, you'll miss what's right in front of you,” says King. “This record is us trying to take an honest look at ourselves, and where we’ve been — and asking if the beliefs we’ve carried along the way are still serving us, where we are right now.”

Far Out Country arrives two years after the release of their critically acclaimed Easy Company and reunites the band with GRAMMY-winning producer Brad Cook (Waxahatchee, MJ Lenderman). Half of the album was recorded at Sonic Ranch in the Texas borderlands, where they tracked live to tape, channeling the energy of their wild live shows that led Rolling Stone to call them “one of the most fascinating and captivating rock acts touring today.” The other nine songs were recorded piece-by-piece in much smaller studios, four of which were produced by the band’s own Tom Myers, requiring the bandmates to be methodical and deliberate with each layer of sound they added.

Later this month, Futurebirds will kick off an extensive nationwide summer tour that begins May 22 in Savannah, GA, with support from Joelton Mayfield and Deloyd Elze. Futurebirds v6.0 is Brannen Miles (bass), Carter King (vocals, guitar), Daniel Womack (vocals, guitar), Thomas Johnson (vocals, guitar), and Tom Myers (drums).
