Jack Johnson Announces SURFILMUSIC Cinema Release

JACK JOHNSON ANNOUNCES THEATRICAL RUN OF SURFILMUSIC, A NEW DOCUMENTARY TO HIT THEATRES BEGINNING JUNE 5

Jack Johnson has announced a cinema release of the new documentary SURFILMUSIC, beginning June 5, with screenings in more than 100 movie theatres throughout the summer, including Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, Regal Cinemas, Marcus Theatres, Laemmle Theatres, Hoyts, Event Cinemas, CinemaxX, and UCI Kinowelt, along with special screenings at Melkweg, La Paloma Theatre, Angelika Film Center, and more. Tickets for nationwide screenings beginning June 5 can be purchased via SURFILMUSIC.JackJohnsonMusic.com. For more information and the full list of theaters, visit JackJohnsonMusic.com.

In celebration of the theatrical run, Johnson is hosting two hometown premieres at the beautiful Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. Audiences will also have the opportunity to win tickets to a special June 3 West Coast premiere at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, CA, in the coming weeks through social media, record stores, radio, and surf shops. Information will be announced soon.

Directed by Emmett Malloy, SURFILMUSIC traces how Johnson’s early years making surf films with close friends became a foundation for a much broader creative life, capturing moments in and out of the water that later surfaced in his songwriting. Blending rare footage from those formative surf films and Johnson's personal and family archives with present-day reflections, the film weaves together how lived experience, friendship, and exploration shaped the sound and stories behind the music. Featuring Jack Johnson, Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Gerry Lopez, Chris Malloy, G. Love, Ben Harper, John John Florence, Emmett Malloy, Kim Johnson, and more, with a beautiful score by Jack Johnson and Hermanos Gutiérrez.

Following its acclaimed world premiere at SXSW earlier this year, SURFILMUSIC has continued to generate strong early praise. “A moving documentary,” said Rolling Stone. Fast Company added, “In his recent documentary, what becomes clear is that he didn’t abandon one identity to become another..Surfing informed his filmmaking. Filmmaking shaped his music. His music carried the rhythm of both. He didn’t specialize; he integrated. And that may be one of the most important leadership capabilities of the next decade.”

SURFILMUSIC will also make waves internationally with theatrical screenings in nine countries and counting, including Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, among others. All North American and International screenings are booked by Evan Saxon Productions and the film is presented through Federal Films, with sales and distribution by Mercury Studios.

Johnson’s double album, SURFILMUSIC Soundtrack and 4-Tracks, is also out now through Brushfire Records. The SURFILMUSIC Soundtrack features the film’s original score by Jack Johnson and Hermanos Gutiérrez alongside remastered selections from Johnson’s early four-track recordings, while SURFILMUSIC 4-Tracks offers a deeper dive into the archival music from Johnson’s personal tapes, including raw recordings and previously unreleased gems from his earliest days making music, and is available at select retailers and all streaming platforms.

A new video for the classic track “F-Stop Blues” is also out today, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the making of The September Sessions, with Jack capturing his friends and the surf trip that ultimately inspired the song.

Additionally, Jack Johnson’s SURFILMUSIC Tour will head to North America’s most beautiful outdoor venues, including Merriweather Post Pavilion on June 26 in Columbia, MD; Blossom Music Center on July 7 in Cuyahoga Falls, OH; Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre on September 2-3 in Greenwood Village, CO; The Gorge Amphitheatre on September 26 in George, WA; McMenamins Edgefield Amphitheater on September 28 in Troutdale, OR; and concluding in California with shows at the historic Greek Theatre on September 30 and October 1 in Berkeley, CA; Santa Barbara Bowl on October 3 and 4 in Santa Barbara, CA; and two unforgettable nights at the legendary Hollywood Bowl on October 10-11 in Los Angeles, CA, with Hermanos Gutiérrez opening for many of the dates along with Lake Street Dive and longtime friend, G. Love. The full 2026 itinerary with support is listed below.
