Darren Flynn, a singer-songwriter from Ireland who plays Americana-infused folk and country, returns with his new single “Pinebox” on Friday, June 12, 2026. The track is the second in a series of singles Flynn will release throughout 2026, each supported with its own release campaign.

Flynn recently had his first single, “I Ain’t Gonna Worry About It,” featured here on Grateful Web, and “Pinebox” continues building on that momentum with an interesting combination of Irish folk elements and a powerful message.

Darren Flynn has been nominated for the Choice Music Award, received radio support from Radio Nova, KCLR96FM, and Cork 96FM, and has performed on National Irish Television, RTE 1, and National Irish Radio, RTE Radio 1. National music magazine Hot Press called his first single, “I Ain’t Gonna Worry About It,” “a brand new feel-good classic for fans of folk and country.”

Irish singer-songwriter Darren Flynn returns with his latest single “Pinebox,” which is set for release on June 12. It’s a lyrical commentary on war and conscription which is as relevant today as ever. Flynn’s ability to convey sentiment and meaning with his trademark musical style makes this an immensely engaging track.

Flynn has already gained much attention and a variety of support for his previous releases. His recent single “I Ain’t Gonna Worry About It” was featured in Ireland’s Hot Press magazine, who described the track as “a brand new feel-good classic for the fans of folk and country.”

Flynn also received strong support for his previous singles “Mountain Whiskey” and “Big Blue Moon,” which were both embraced by Radio Nova’s Pat James and RTE Radio 1’s Brian Lally on his show “Country Time,” who called Flynn’s music “Mighty fine ... perfect for a ‘Hooch’ special.”

Features and reviews also came from mp3hugger.com, who called “Big Blue Moon” “As lively as they come and the kind of track that just encourages hand claps from the get-go,” and from Veta Gumbler on her nationally syndicated US radio show “Bluegrass and Beyond,” who regularly gave “Mountain Whiskey” a spin.

The new single “Pinebox” is underpinned by a frenetic acoustic guitar and a sense of Irish tradition. Flynn’s lyrics juxtapose this with themes of life, death, and the politics of conflict. It is a song that has been compared to the storytelling of songwriters such as Tom Waits.

Flynn explains how the song was influenced by post-WWI poet Siegfried Sassoon and Taylor Holmes’ famous reading of Rudyard Kipling's “Boots,” as well as the commentary on soldiers conscripted to fight wars and the disposability of life. This is reflected with the cheap coffins used for fallen soldiers, hence the song’s title, “Pinebox.”

The whole track is an exercise in ramping up tension, continuously building to a crescendo, in an effort to capture the rising sense of catastrophe that accompanies war.

As Flynn describes: “I wrote the song a few years ago when I started to notice all of these populist far-right movements begin to spring up throughout Europe, all of them championing nationalist and jingoistic ideals. Two things struck me—that the last time such a thing happened, the ultimate result was war between neighbouring countries, and that those who were supporting the demagogues were the ones who could ultimately pay with their lives, not the demagogues themselves.”

Flynn is a well-known regular performer on the local Dublin scene and across Europe, with appearances including The Electric Picnic and Kilkenny Roots Festival. He will be performing extensively throughout 2026 and has a series of singles scheduled for release throughout the year.

You can catch him at his next show in Sin É, Dublin, on Friday, July 3. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.
