Denver-based roots band Clay Street Unit are bringing their energetic live show to Red Rocks Amphitheatre to open for The String Cheese Incident on Friday, July 17th. They are touring in support of their long-awaited debut album Sin & Squalor, released on February 13th via Leo33.
Produced by Chris Pandolfi of the innovative Grammy-winning group The Infamous Stringdusters, Sin & Squalor captures the spirit of the West, the folk and country traditions of the South, and the verve of modern Americana. Listen to Sin & Squalor HERE.
Formed in Denver in 2021, the group’s 2022 debut EP, A Mighty Fine Evening, introduced their genre-blending sound as Clay Street Unit and worked tirelessly to galvanize their live performances. The band played around the Denver and Colorado music scenes before hitting the road from coast to coast, which garnered a passionate community of fans who helped spread word about their incendiary live shows.
From vivid storytelling to exceptional musicianship, Sin & Squalor is the sound of a band hitting its stride. The balance between joy and hardship and sin and salvation lie at the heart of their songwriting. The title sets the tone for a collection of songs that celebrate life in all its grit and grace. Walker’s ability to turn everyday stories into something cinematic is just one element highlighted through the track list of Sin & Squalor.
Clay Street Unit is Sam Walker on lead vocals/guitar, Scottie Bolin on mandolin/vocals, Jack Cline on banjo, Brad Larrison on pedal steel, Brendan Lamb on drums, and Jack Kotarba on bass. With band members originating in Montgomery, AL, Charlottesville, VA, Atlanta, GA, Philadelphia, PA, Denver, CO, and Washington DC, their diverse backgrounds and influences come together to shape their signature style. A style that is fresh yet timeless and fully realized on Sin & Squalor.
“…Clay Street Unit are taking folk music by storm. And the release of their debut album, ‘Sin & Squalor’, finally appeases a fan base that was clamoring for recorded music.”
– Rolling Stone
“As the six-piece rifles through banjo-fueled barnburners and kaleidoscopic jams, all 11 tracks are enlivened by the group’s potent songwriting and unreserved craft, but most of all, by their obvious love of music and respect for one another.”
– No Depression
"Blending bluegrass with folk, country, and Americana, echoes of everyone from Doc Watson and Earl Scruggs to more modern musicians like Chris Stapleton and Sierra Ferrell can be heard throughout the 11-track collection."
