Mason Jennings Shares “If,” Inspired by the Minneapolis Occupation and Murders by ICE

Mason Jennings has shared “If,” the second single to be released in advance of the indie-folk singer-songwriter’s 18th studio album, Dark Wings, due July 10 on Loosegroove Records.

The song was inspired by and reflects upon the occupation and murders in Jennings’ hometown of Minneapolis. Its release is accompanied by a video directed by Regan Hagar.

Jennings explains:

“‘If’ was one of the last songs I wrote for this album. I was talking with a friend about the troubled state of the country, especially in Minnesota, and just feeling how far this world had slid from where I hoped it would be, where I think it could be, especially regarding love and equality and care for others. So I came home after our talk and started thinking about all the ‘ifs’ in my life, and this song just rolled from there.”

Across 11 songs on Dark Wings, the Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter grapples with trauma, faith, survival and hope. The songwriting itself is unflinching and stark, yet quietly hopeful. The collection finds Jennings at a powerful new stage: still searching, still believing and finally letting the songs take the shape they demand.

Jennings continues:

“These last couple years have been destabilizing and challenging for most of us. In times of stress and grief and anger, I continue to turn to, and have great faith in, the Creative Spirit and the power of hope and love in the human heart. That’s what this album is a result of and a testament to.”

Alongside the release of “If,” Jennings has announced several new tour dates in late summer throughout the Midwest and California, including a hometown Minneapolis album release show at The Parkway Theater on Friday, July 31.
