Seventeen-year-old mandolinist, vocalist, and songwriter Wyatt Ellis will bring Appalachian mountain music to some of the country’s most prominent cultural stages this summer, with appearances at the Aspen Ideas Festival, Lincoln Center, and alongside the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.

A native of East Tennessee, Ellis learned Appalachian music from its source in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains and has earned recognition for both his command of traditional mountain music and his original songwriting and compositions. Alongside his deep connection to mountain music, his creative work draws inspiration from the people, places, and stories of Appalachia.

The series of appearances continues a creative partnership with acclaimed pianist, broadcaster, and cultural advocate Lara Downes, which began at Knoxville’s Big Ears Festival.

On June 25, Ellis joins Downes at the Aspen Ideas Festival for “Hold These Truths: A Celebration of American Song,” exploring the role of music in shaping the American experience. He then travels to New York City to represent Appalachian music as part of Lincoln Center’s Next 250 Young Artists Showcase on June 27, before returning to Lincoln Center on July 1 for Declaration: Songs of Democracy, Voices of Hope.

On July 4, Ellis returns home to Knoxville's World's Fair Park, where the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra will perform newly commissioned orchestral arrangements of three of his original compositions, conducted by Aram Demirjian.

Together, these appearances highlight both the enduring influence of Appalachian music and the emergence of a new generation of artists carrying the tradition forward through original work and new collaborations.
