Spafford kept the music rolling well into the early morning hours this past weekend, taking over The Cutting Room in New York City for a two-night run of Phish after-parties on July 24 and 25.
With Phish fans pouring out of Madison Square Garden and looking to keep the night alive, Spafford delivered exactly what the late-night crowd came for: high energy, deep improvisation, and the kind of extended jams that have become the band’s calling card.
Both nights stretched past 2 a.m., with Spafford leaning heavily into its improvisational side. Rather than treating the shows as simply another stop on the calendar, the band embraced the anything-can-happen atmosphere of a New York City after-party, allowing songs to open into lengthy explorations and feeding off a crowd that showed little interest in calling it a night.

The weekend continued a busy summer for Spafford following the June release of their latest studio album, Cat Shop. While the record captures another chapter of the band’s evolving studio sound, the New York shows offered a reminder of why Spafford has developed such a devoted following on the road.
Long-form improvisation, patience, and a willingness to follow a musical idea wherever it leads remain at the center of the band’s live identity.
For two nights at The Cutting Room, the torch belonged to Spafford.
