Mountain Grass Unit today releases “Suspicion,” a haunting, traditional bluegrass heartbreak ballad from its forthcoming debut studio album, Appalachian Smoke, arriving August 28 via Dualtone Records.

Lustful, yearning, and edged with unease, the song unfolds inside the racing mind of a tormented lover who senses a partner slipping away as the truth remains just out of reach.
Co-written by Mountain Grass Unit fiddler Josiah Nelson and the band’s Dualtone labelmate Aubory Bugg, “Suspicion” arrives with a self-produced and self-directed music video filmed during a hike through the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina between tour dates.

Directed by Mountain Grass Unit, shot by Cameron Reichert, and edited by guitarist Luke Black, the clip transforms a fleeting offstage moment into an atmospheric visual companion to the song.
Reichert serves as Mountain Grass Unit’s front-of-house audio engineer and was recently named a nominee for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s 2026 Sound Engineer of the Year Award. His work behind the camera makes the video a true extension of the band’s life on the road, created by the same close-knit team responsible for carrying Mountain Grass Unit’s music from room to room each night.
For all of Appalachian Smoke’s outward reach, “Suspicion” is one of the album’s most tradition-minded moments. The song draws on bluegrass’s plainspoken emotional directness while revealing a darker corner of the quartet’s expanding musical identity.
Elsewhere, the record moves through psychedelic rock textures, jamgrass exploration, and expansive American roots music. Here, Mountain Grass Unit narrows the frame and lets the lyrics, tension, and unresolved ache do the work.
Produced by six-time Grammy winner Vance Powell, whose credits include Chris Stapleton, Jack White, and Phish, Appalachian Smoke was recorded nearly entirely live and without a metronome, preserving the spontaneity, feel, and instinctive interplay that define Mountain Grass Unit onstage.
The 13-track collection honors the bluegrass tradition that shaped the Birmingham-born quartet while pushing confidently beyond its boundaries. Guests across the record include Greensky Bluegrass’ Anders Beck, pedal steel player Karl Smakula, and Grammy-winning fiddler Michael Cleveland.

Appalachian Smoke also documents the band’s first chapter as a full-time unit. After mandolinist and vocalist Drury Anderson, guitarist Luke Black, and bassist Sam Wilson completed college, they joined fiddler Josiah Nelson in committing fully to life on the road.
That decision accelerated everything: more than 30 sold-out shows in 2025, international touring, an IBMA Momentum Band of the Year win, and a growing presence on some of the country’s largest festival stages.
“Suspicion” arrives in the midst of a breakthrough summer that has already included appearances at Railbird, Bonnaroo, High Sierra, and Under the Big Sky, along with select dates supporting country legend Dierks Bentley.
The band’s upcoming schedule includes the Grand Targhee Bluegrass Festival and Green Mountain Bluegrass & Roots, followed by a milestone week in Nashville surrounding the release of Appalachian Smoke.
On August 26, Mountain Grass Unit will make its Grand Ole Opry debut following a surprise invitation delivered onstage at DelFest by Del McCoury and Ronnie McCoury. The following night, the band will celebrate the album’s arrival with an August 27 release show at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville before carrying Appalachian Smoke into an expansive fall headline run across North America.

About Mountain Grass Unit
Mountain Grass Unit stands at the intersection of bluegrass music’s past and future. Formed around the long-running musical bond between mandolinist and vocalist Drury Anderson, guitarist Luke Black, and bassist Sam Wilson, the Birmingham, Alabama-born band has spent more than a decade turning childhood chemistry into a singular modern roots language.
With fiddle virtuoso Josiah Nelson completing the lineup, Mountain Grass Unit has grown from bluegrass-influenced Grateful Dead covers and grassroots touring into one of the genre’s most closely watched young acts.
