Grateful Dead’s 1985 Rex Foundation Benefit Shows Arrive on Play Dead

Adding to last week’s release from March 9, 1985, Tuesday Dead Drops continues the Rex Foundation festivities in Berkeley with two more Grateful Dead shows from March 10 and 12, 1985.

“The Rex Foundation was barely two years old in 1985, and these shows already had a dual purpose: gather the community for an incredible night of music and then send the ripple effects of that energy—and the money raised—right back into the community.

“March 10 delivers ‘Stranger’ > ‘Peggy-O,’ a beautiful ‘Bird Song,’ and a Sunday sermon of ‘Samson’ > ‘Terrapin’ > ‘Truckin’’ > ‘Smokestack.’ After ‘Drums’ > ‘Space,’ Jerry shines on ‘Stella Blue’ before the band rocks Berkeley home.

“After a day off, March 12 opens with ‘Iko Iko.’ The second set gives us ‘Touch of Grey,’ a deep journey into ‘Playin’’ > ‘Drums’ > ‘Space,’ and a surprise ‘He’s Gone’ > ‘Throwing Stones’ > ‘NFA’ > ‘Lovelight.’

“Great music with a purpose. Forty-one years later, that ripple continues. I’m incredibly proud to serve on the Rex Foundation Board and see firsthand how this tradition still turns the energy of this community into a positive impact on other people’s lives. Enjoy!” — Martin Knott

Curated by David Lemieux, these new David Glasser masters come from the original Grateful Dead F1 digital tapes and are now streaming in hi-res.
