Amsterdam five-piece 12 Tribes of Mars has released its debut album, Hidden Sun, digitally and as a limited-edition 12-inch vinyl pressing through Dubophonic Records.

Formed in Amsterdam in 2022, 12 Tribes of Mars brings together jazz-trained musicians who are most comfortable working between genres. The instrumental group begins with the foundational sounds of reggae, ska and dub before moving into jazz, funk, electronic effects and free improvisation.
The band describes its music as a meeting point between hypnotic acoustic grooves and spontaneous experimentation. Its live performances can shift from tight, danceable rhythms into wild improvisational passages before returning to the groove as if nothing happened.
Hidden Sun carries that approach across eight tracks. Laid-back rhythms sit alongside tightly arranged passages, melodic hooks, post-rock textures and excursions into jazz and free improvisation. The result is music made for close listening as much as dancing.
12 Tribes of Mars features Andrius Dereviancenko on saxophone and effects, James McClure on trumpet and effects, Azubike Onwuka on bass guitar, Robin Engelhard on guitar and Onno Govaert on drums.
The album was recorded at Ruigoord by Mozes Meijer, mixed by Ruben Kieftenbelt and mastered by Attie Bauw. Artwork and graphic design were created by Goytung. All songs were written and produced by Dereviancenko.
Hidden Sun is available as a digital album and as a limited vinyl edition of 200 copies.
