Tracked live in a Silverthorne, Colorado, cabin, the project resurrects the gritty graveyard lore of Edgar Lee Masters’ iconic 1915 poetry collection through raw, 1990s-style acoustic production.
Spoon River Anthology details the scandalous, heartbreaking and inspiring stories of the fictional inhabitants of a small-town cemetery. Masters’ original collection of short, free-form poems gives voice to these forgotten characters.
To capture this distinct literary intrigue, Thompson bypassed modern digital perfection. “Unknown” is anchored by a driving 112-bpm acoustic rhythm recorded on a Martin 000 with tube ribbon microphones, supported by wide analog beds and weeping pedal steel. The result is a weathered, cinematic soundscape that bridges the gap between traditional folk roots and modern alt-country.
“I didn’t want this to sound like a history lesson; I wanted it to sound like a ghost story told in a wooden room,” says Thompson. “We pushed the acoustic guitars hard into tape saturation to give these 1915 characters the raw, physical weight their stories demanded.”
