“Mt. Joy's songs unfold like good political speeches: They amble and converse and pulsate fervently until it's time to get the crowd chanting along.” — NPR
Formed in 2016, the Philadelphia-rooted indie-rock band features Matt Quinn on vocals and guitar, Sam Cooper on guitar, Jackie Miclau on keys and piano, Sotiris Eliopoulos on drums, and Michael Byrnes on bass. Their sound pairs rootsy instrumentation with Quinn’s soulful vocals and songs that make room for both reflection and a crowd-wide singalong.
After building their following with Mt. Joy (2018), Rearrange Us (2020) and Orange Blood (2022), the five-piece reached new heights in 2024, selling out Madison Square Garden, Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre and Red Rocks. Their 70-date North American and European headline tour that year sold more than 180,000 tickets.
The band followed with Hope We Have Fun, released May 30, 2025, and a North American tour that included sold-out performances at Boston’s TD Garden and New York’s Forest Hills Stadium, a stop at Colorado’s Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre, and appearances at Governors Ball and Newport Folk Festival.
For Quinn, Hope We Have Fun reflects the relationships that hold a touring band together through the excitement, exhaustion and uncertainty of life on the road.
“We've all worked incredibly hard together and done ridiculous things in sickness and in health. You just kind of look up and you're at Madison Square Garden with these people, and it makes you emotional — it feels like something you never could have dreamed. The album is a realization that we pushed ourselves into this crazy world, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse. It's a lot about sticking together in relationships, living a crazy lifestyle and just kinda saying, ‘I hope we have fun.’”
The record’s thirteen tracks explore those highs, lows and quieter moments. “Highway Queen,” also released as a duet with Maren Morris, considers the connection between two people drawn to a transient life. “God Loves Weirdos” finds affection in truck-stop date nights, while “More More More” confronts the silence that can follow a return home. Elsewhere, “She Wants to Go Dancing” and “Coyote” make room for celebration.
Mt. Joy’s catalog has surpassed one billion global streams, with “Silver Lining,” “Jenny Jenkins,” “Lemon Tree,” “Strangers,” “Highway Queen” and “She Wants to Go Dancing” all reaching the Top 5 at AAA radio. The August engagement brings the band back to a venue that has become a significant stop in its touring story, this time for a three-night summer run.
