Brooklyn's own Space Bacon celebrated the release of its new LP, Chaos Game, on Friday, October 23, with a hometown album release party at Brooklyn Bowl. The record came out that same day. Space Bacon shared the co-bill with Bloomington, Indiana's Dizgo, just two weeks removed from dropping its own new album, Innerstate. DJ Greenie, aka Mike Greenfield of Lotus, provided thumping DJ sets before and between the bands.
A fifteen-minute psychedelic and funk-fueled "Run" kicked off Dizgo's set, captured above in a clip by our videographer Vinny Vallely. Bassist Kevin Hinnefeld's thumping and keyboardist Jake Evatt's synthy exploration elevated the opening tune. The newer original "Chimera," which has yet to land on a studio album, followed with an '80s disco feel. Guitarist Andrew Pickel used a delay pedal to take the EDM-inspired tune to new heights over a 12-minute ride.
"Chimera" flowed straight into "Owner of a Lonely Heart," the 1983 Yes hit from 90125, sung by Evatt in falsetto. Check out a clip from this raging cover above by Vallely. The Bloomington quartet slayed the prog rock classic. Drummer Justin Clark drove the tune as he adeptly changed the cadence, while Evatt decorated on synth.

"It's Alive," one of the fresh cuts from Innerstate, brought a dark, minor-chord vibe. The eerie tune was perfect for the upcoming Halloween holiday. Hinnefeld channeled Les Claypool, while Pickel brought the peaks and valleys to this evil, dance-friendly original.
The bubbly "Rainbow Lightning," from 2024's Melt, delivered great juxtaposition with its slap-happy funk. Clark once again showed his versatility as Evatt dabbled with spacey effects. A masterful transition found the band in "Blue Monday" by New Order, a cover Dizgo first played this past August in Buffalo. Vallely captured the song perfectly in the clip above. Pickel contributed vocals to this up-tempo fusion of prog rock and trance. Magically, the band landed back in "Rainbow Lightning."

"Goin' Nowhere" brought another racing beat with dark undertones. The vocal effects perfectly complemented the menacing feel, and Pickel was a beast. The song slid into "It's Alright," the opening track on Melt, which pivoted back to major chords and more tasty funk. "Exit 59," released as a single ahead of Innerstate and now the album's second track, capped off the lively set with dance-inducing funk rock.

Notably, Dizgo had really stellar vocals and legit lights across a set that ran close to an hour and a half. The band should be on every jam band fan's list of bands to see.

Space Bacon's set leaned heavily on the new album. After a short intro, "Ice Planet" kicked things off with a frosty, fresh, dance-inducing jam and heavy synthesizer courtesy of keyboardist Chris Gironda. A smooth transition dropped the band into "Parachute," as drummer Sam Crespo kept the cadence tight.
The band delved into Chaos Game next with its opening track and lead single, "Computervision," as seen in the above track by Vallely. The 10-minute up-tempo trance workout found bassist Kevin LeGall driving the low end. Guitarist Fred Rylands kept things dark as the band transitioned into the robotic-sounding "The Robots," a Kraftwerk cover laced with samples of Daft Punk's "Technologic" and LCD Soundsystem's "Get Innocuous!" Rylands found some great tension and release during the nine-minute jam before "The Robots" mechanically moved back into "Computervision."

The band then dug into the album's title track, "Chaos Game," in its first live performance. Rylands showed his skill on guitar with the intricate tune, a departure from the video-game-sounding tracks that came before. About halfway through, the song reverted and got quite dark. The familiar "Stare Into The Sun" was up next. A seamless transition brought the quartet into "Show Me Love," and the band brought out special guest singer Coco Solazzo for the occasion. View this incredible video by Vallely of this high energy cover. She brought a lot of energy and had the crowd going with the famous Robin S. cover. Afterward, the band skillfully moved back into "Stare Into The Sun," which stretched past 10 minutes on its own and carried teases of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" and Pantera's "I'm Broken." The synthesizers were certainly fired up for the 20-minute sequence.

The menacing "Gargantua," another track from Chaos Game, followed in its live debut. "Snake Charmer," also on the new album, was dedicated to the band's friend Fleischman and continued the darker vibe. Another stellar transition found the music in "Take It Off" by Fisher, and Gironda showed how skillful he is on the synth. The heat only intensified as the band moved back into "Ice Planet" to close the set.

Space Bacon paused for a quick family photo, before diving into an encore of "Parachute." The tune leaned in on major chords and was a bit of a departure from the rest of the set. Another mind-melding transition ended the show in the darker "Snake Charmer."

Chaos Game is out now on Bandcamp and streaming platforms, and the full soundboard of Space Bacon's set is available on nugs. Dizgo posted its set on Bandcamp.
