Sue Foley Releases Alone (Together) Holiday Blues Album

Sue Foley offers a different soundtrack to the holidays with Alone (Together) A Holiday Companion, out now on CD, vinyl and digital via FOMZ Records. Across eight songs, the GRAMMY-nominated guitarist and singer makes room for the feelings that seasonal celebrations can sometimes overlook, pairing understated performances with a mix of humor, heartache, and soulful commiseration.

Rooted in Texas blues, the arrangements evoke the relaxed, intimate feel of a late-night blues lounge, with touches of Charles Brown’s signature warmth. Foley lets the songs breathe, finding expression in an unhurried groove, a turn of phrase, or a guitar passage. The result welcomes listeners who love the season as well as those simply trying to get through it.

“I made this album for people who find the holidays difficult, especially those who are spending them alone,” Foley explains. “It’s meant to be a companion, to bring a little comfort and connection at a time of year that can be hard for a lot of people. For anyone spending the holidays alone, this is for you.”

Following the acoustic focus of her GRAMMY-nominated One Guitar Woman, Foley plugs back in for a collection that moves between holiday material and songs whose themes reach well beyond the season. Her singing and electric guitar guide the album through moments of longing, playfulness, and understanding.

Three Foley originals—“’Tis the Season,” “Just Another Day,” and “Jingle Blues (Cha-Cha)”—join interpretations of “Merry Christmas Darling,” “Christmas Blues,” “Santa Claus Do You Ever Get the Blues?” and “I’ll Take Care of You.” Together, they offer a December listening experience with plenty to say during the other eleven months.

Listeners got their first introduction to the collection through “Ride On,” the record’s first single and an unexpected selection from the Bon Scott era AC/DC catalog. Foley finds the blues running through the song and gives it a spacious treatment. With the full album now available, “Ride On” takes its place within a broader collection of seasonal reflections and songs of comfort.

Sue Foley and Michael Zschoche produced the sessions at KNKY Recordings in Dripping Springs, Texas, with Russell Tanner recording. Jacob Sciba mixed the album at Austin’s Arlyn Studios, and Howie Weinberg handled mastering.
