The 13th Annual Nolafunk Series During Jazz Fest continues its tradition of presenting shows that are anything but “just another stop on a tour.” Each night in the series is built around a unique concept, collaboration, or lineup that either has never happened before, and may never happen again.
The Rumble kicks off the series Thursday April 23 with a special P-Funk tribute set, featuring an all-star group of special guests including Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Jennifer Hartswick, Anjelica “Jelly” Joseph, and Robert “Sput” Searight of Snarky Puppy.
BoomBassador brings together two of the scene’s most recognizable electronic live acts — BoomBox and The Polish Ambassador — for a late-night Jazz Fest weekend set built for dancing and discovery. Known for blending electronic production with live instrumentation, improvisation, and festival-ready energy, both artists have cultivated devoted national followings that rarely get the chance to see them share a bill in an intimate club setting.
After years of performing multi-night runs, Voodoo Dead returns for a one-night-only performance. For the first time ever, Ivan Neville will join the band for the entire second set, with Robert Walter handling keyboards in the first. Mainstays Steve Kimock, George Porter Jr., Jackie Greene, and John Kimock return, along with special guest Papa Mali.
Sunday first weekend will feature the Nolafunk series debut of Mountain Grass Unit, the fast-rising bluegrass quartet bringing their high-energy picking to Republic NOLA. In true New Orleans fashion, the night opens with TBC Brass Band, creating a rare and distinctly local pairing of brass band tradition and modern bluegrass momentum. It’s the kind of cross-genre moment that captures the spirit of Jazz Fest after dark - something that could only happen in New Orleans.
The 4th Annual Daniel Donato’s Cosmic NOLA will feature previously mentioned Grahame Lesh, Al Schnier of moe., George Porter Jr., Kanika Moore, and Branden Lewis of Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Fan favorite Dead Feat is back with its signature fusion of Grateful Dead and Little Feat, and for the first time ever, Little Feat’s Bill Payne will join on keys, alongside bandmates Fred Tackett and Kenny Gradney. Anders Osborne, his longtime drummer Chad Cromwell, and Jackie Greene round out the lineup.
Earth Wind & Power features The Nth Power plus special guests Mark Lettieri (Snarky Puppy, Fearless Flyers), Skerik (Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade), Peter Levin (Blind Boys of Alabama), Alex Wasily (Dumpstaphunk), Courtney Smith (formerly of The Nth Power), Kanika Moore (TAUK Moore) Shira Elias (Cool Cool Cool), and more.
Members of The Nth Power — Nikki Glaspie, Nate Edgar, and Nick Cassarino — for their all-star Steely Dan tribute, STEELY DANth, finalized their musician lineup including Cory Henry (formerly of Snarky Puppy), Mark Lettieri (Snarky Puppy, Fearless Flyers), Brandon “Taz” Niederauer (Jon Batiste), Peter Levin (Blind Boys of Alabama), Paul Robertson (Soul Rebels), Tim Palmieri (Lotus), Kanika Moore (TAUK Moore), and Shira Elias (Cool Cool Cool), and more.
Anders Osborne’s NOLA Birthday Bash returns as one of the emotional centerpieces of the series, bringing together friends, collaborators, and surprise guests for a night that has become a Jazz Fest weekend tradition. This year’s lineup includes Dave Malone, Jackie Greene, Lindsay Lou, Stanton Moore, Eddie 9V, Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz, a very special surprise guest, and more, with Rebirth Brass Band adding a celebratory New Orleans second-line energy to the evening. Equal parts hometown celebration and once-a-year musical summit, the show continues to stand as one of the most anticipated nights of the Nolafunk run.
