Women’s History Month takes on a special resonance in Berkeley this March as American Beauties return to Ashkenaz for their 4th Annual Women’s History Month Celebration — a night dedicated to honoring the enduring legacy of Bobby Weir and Donna Jean Godchaux.
Taking place on Friday, March 13, the all-ages celebration highlights the vital role women have played — and continue to play — in shaping the Grateful Dead universe and the broader American music landscape. At the heart of the evening is Donna Jean Godchaux’s fearless, soulful voice, a sound that helped define an era and opened doors for generations of women on improvisational stages.
American Beauties, known for their spirited interpretations of Grateful Dead music through a distinctly female lens, bring both reverence and joy to the material. Their annual Women’s History Month gathering has become a beloved Bay Area tradition — part tribute, part celebration, and wholly rooted in community.
True to Ashkenaz’s long-standing mission, the show is welcoming to all ages, inviting longtime Deadheads, families, students, and newcomers alike to share the dance floor and the moment.
