For the past decade, Andrew Leahey has pushed against the boundaries of Americana music, releasing hook-driven records that have more in common with the heartland rock & roll of Tom Petty than the traditional sounds of his Nashville home. With "Horizonless" — the first single from KICK / MOVE / SHAKE, the upcoming fifth album from Leahey's critically-acclaimed band, Andrew Leahey & the Homestead — he steps into a new sound altogether.
Heavily inspired by the '80s pop hits of Leahey's childhood, "Horizonless" isn't just an expansion — it's a musical makeover. Synthesizers, glittering guitars, stacked vocal harmonies, and larger-than-life pop melodies are the song's building blocks, stacked into sparkling shape by Leahey (a three-time semi-finalist at the International Songwriting Competition) and producer Gregory Lattimer (Albert Hammond Jr., Aaron Lee Tasjan). Already praised by Rolling Stone for his "sharp storytelling and fist-pumping rock & roll swagger," Leahey showcases the full reach of his songwriting with "Horizonless," resulting in a nostalgic alt-pop single for modern times. The album itself, KICK / MOVE / SHAKE, is due October 31st. (Watch the unreleased music video for "Horizonless" here.)
Leahey has a long history of reinvention. A trained vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, he sang classical music at The Juilliard School before shifting focus to his own compositions. Moving to Nashville, he built a national audience with albums like Airwaves and the two-volume American Static while also establishing himself as a modern-day guitar hero, backing up artists like John Oates, Steve Earle, and Butch Walker. KICK / MOVE / SHAKE was written during a rollercoaster era that found him losing his mother to Alzheimer's, playing to sold-out crowds on Willie Nelson's Outlaw Music Festival Tour, and touring the country as Elizabeth Cook's longtime bandleader.
This autumn, Leahey will support KICK / MOVE / SHAKE's release with shows in six countries, sharing shows with acts like Hannah Aldridge, Paul McDonald, and The Pleasures.
