Asher Brinson Releases Debut Album Midnight Hurricane Featuring Sierra Hull, Sam Bush and More

Asher Brinson Brings Old-soul Roots with Fresh Energy in Debut Release Midnight Hurricane

Newport, NCAsher Brinson, a young left-handed guitar picker, singer, and songwriter from Newport, North Carolina, independently releases his debut album Midnight Hurricane. Based on the Carolina coast, his refreshingly honest sound is shaped by coastal rhythms, everyday stories, and the people around him.

Asher has been around music his entire life and is self-taught through jams with his family and their friends. He started attending the Galax Fiddlers Convention, among other events, then dove headfirst into bluegrass and songwriting. Asher quickly found his footing, crossing paths with legendary flatpicker Wayne Henderson, who became a mentor and friend and even built Asher a rare left-handed guitar. Since then, Asher has shared stages at MerleFest, the Wayne C. Henderson Festival, IBMA, and beyond, while continuing to hone his craft and write original music.

Asher recently played as part of The Travelin’ McCourys Young Guns Tour at The Caverns underground in Tennessee and will participate again at the Bijou Theatre in Knoxville, Tennessee, on April 9 and Community Church Concerts in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on April 10. He will also perform at Ocrafolk Festival June 5–7 and the Outer Banks Bluegrass Island Festival October 15–17.

In the spring of 2024, Asher started taking lessons with Christopher Henry, an acclaimed musician, singer, songwriter, and mandolinist, as well as the founder of Noya Mountain Music Studio. After a handful of months of lessons, he had written seven songs and an instrumental. In December 2024, they went into the studio and started recording Asher’s first tracks with Christopher producing.

Midnight Hurricane features eight original songs along with one Billy Strings cover and two traditional instrumental tracks. The album is backed by an all-star group of collaborators, with the core group consisting of Asher on lead vocals and guitar, Cory Walker on banjo, Jason Carter on fiddle, and album producer Christopher Henry on bass, mandolin, and other instruments. Further collaborations on Midnight Hurricane include contributions from Sam Bush, Sierra Hull, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, Justin Moses, Smith Curry, David Grier, and Lindsay Lou, adding rich layers to an already standout release.

The title track, “Midnight Hurricane,” featuring Sierra Hull on mandolin and Lindsay Lou on tenor vocals, is inspired by his experiences living through hurricanes on the Carolina coast. Asher says, “This song naturally evolved from living on the North Carolina coast, experiencing the late-night intensity of hurricanes—where you hear everything but see nothing.”

Inspired by old stories of train hopping, “Lonesome Hobo Song” features Sam Bush on mandolin. Sam also plays on “Low Hanging Fruit,” which is the first song Asher ever wrote, as well as the traditional instrumental “Cattle in the Cane.” Asher says, “Every time I play ‘Cattle in the Cane,’ I feel like I’m stepping back in time and connecting with all the people who’ve played it before me. The melody just sticks in your head, and it’s so fun to mess around with and add my own little twists.”

With Asher’s country-slanted vocals sung over a backdrop of the slow-rolling swells of Smith Curry’s pedal steel, “And Why Is That” pays tribute to a close family friend, Kevin, who lived on a sailboat and whose influence was profound.

“Living Too Fast,” featuring Justin Moses on Dobro, appreciates life’s little moments, while “Jesus Delivered Today” recounts Asher’s own birth story. He says, “Hearing my dad and grandma talk about how scary it was was intense—they both tear up every time—so I figured, why not tell that story and show how God worked behind the scenes to get me here?”

Inspired by local maritime history, the instrumental “Queen Anne’s Waltz” evokes a sense of swaying back and forth on a boat in the water. With the interplay of Asher’s guitar, fiddle harmonies from Jason Carter and Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, and Christopher Henry’s mandolin, the song comes together like a dance.

“I’m Going Back to Galax” honors the first fiddlers’ convention Asher ever competed in, followed by the traditional tune “Black Mountain Rag,” featuring David Grier on guitar.

The album closes with a cover of Billy Strings’ “Seven Weeks in County.” Asher says, “It’s one of those songs that just hits me in a way I cannot ignore. Every time I sing it, I feel like I get to connect with the music on a whole different level, and I hope people can feel that when they listen.”

What Folks Are Saying:

“Very few times in life have I been struck with the feeling that a young person has come onto the scene with as much heart, talent, and authenticity as Asher Brinson. He was like a duck in water writing his first songs telling great stories with catchy hooks including soulful pieces of himself and singing with a pleasant maturity well beyond his years. He’s got a good lick on the guitar and is a special part of the Carolina lineage of Doc Watson. We can all learn something good through his music. He’s reflecting wonderful beauty back to the community with the Midnight Hurricane album and I am thrilled that the stars aligned to have so many inspiring musicians join him to make the recordings really special. I believe it is one of the best albums of 2026 for sure.”
—Christopher Henry

“Music fans are in for a treat as Asher is a triple threat! He’s a great singer, guitar player, and songwriter, AND has accomplished all of this by the age of 16!!! It does my heart good to know that the future of Bluegrass music is in such good hands! I know you’ll enjoy this record. And thanks to Asher for letting me be a small part of it!”
—Jason Carter

“Only rarely does a young bluegrass artist receive the sort of universal acclaim ahead of their debut recording that we are hearing about 16-year-old singer, songwriter, and guitarist Asher Brinson. We heard it about Wyatt Ellis, and it was justified, and we heard it about Sierra Hull, likewise fully justified. Thinking back a ways, we also heard it about Béla Fleck, again warranted by what he has done since… Will Asher earn those same sort of plaudits in the years to come? We should know soon enough, but the top Nashville players who assisted on his initial recordings sure sing his praises.”
—Bluegrass Today, John Lawless

“Songs are solid-plus, set in some mighty fine picking. A-”
—Music Week, Tom Hull

“The songwriting and singing on Midnight Hurricane make it clear that the future of bluegrass music is in very good hands.”
—Making a Scene, Richard Ludmerer

“A Coastal Storm of Bluegrass Brilliance”... “Midnight Hurricane is a rare debut… Asher Brinson has delivered an album that is technically flawless but, more importantly, brimming with heart.”
—Country Music News International Magazine, Christian Lamitschka

“Superb debut album… it is uncommon for an artist to demonstrate equal command across multiple disciplines; however, Brinson defies that expectation. Not only is he an outstanding vocalist, but he is also an accomplished guitarist and a gifted songwriter as well.”
—World Music Central, Angel Romero
