Today, New York City’s historic Blue Note Jazz Club announces two nights with Cuban visionary musician Cimafunk. On August 26 and September 2, at 8 pm and 10:30 pm, Cimafunk will bring his “electrifying combination of funk & soul” (Rolling Stone) and “hypnotic performance” (Wall Street Journal) to NYC’s premier jazz club.
Cimafunk’s Blue Note shows—the first U.S. show since his 2019 Blue Note Jazz Club debut—mark the Cuban funk sensation’s only New York appearances of 2021 and are a part of his upcoming limited northeast tour. In June, he performed at Blue Note’s Miami Summer series alongside Big Freedia and The Soul Rebels and made a special appearance during Robert Glasper’s electrifying set. In addition to his upcoming tour, Cimafunk is slated to release new music including a highly anticipated collaboration with one of funk’s biggest names and a fellow Blue Note performer.
“I can’t wait to bring the house down again at the Blue Note with some Afrocuban Funk. It’s been exactly two years since our last Blue Note gigs and we have lots of new music and many surprises; some really funky stuff,” says Cimafunk. “We love New York. We love the Blue Note. And we’re bringing the funk straight from Cuba to the Big Apple.”
“My band and I are filled with emotion, suffering from the hardships Cubans are passing and the repression peaceful protestors have suffered. We feel blessed to share our music with the world, and try to find peace and understanding through culture,” he added.
“Cimafunk is one of the most extraordinary, culturally important and powerhouse artists and individuals we’re proud to work with,” says Alex Kurland, Director of Programming at Blue Note. “His grace, wisdom, explosive style, and strength as a performer is why he is truly a phenomenon, pioneering an entire movement of funky progressive music. It is a sincere honor working with and presenting Cimafunk at Blue Note, not only because he is a sensational, progressive and genre-bending artist, but because he is an extraordinary and special person deserving of the utmost respect, recognition and opportunity. We feel gratitude for Cimafunk performing at Blue Note, and we are infinitely excited for these upcoming special shows.”
Supporting partners for Cimafunk at Blue Note New York include globalFEST, Remezcla, and SummerStage at Central Park.
