Buddy Miller will release his self-titled Buddy Miller on September 11, 2026 via New West Records. The 12-track set is his first solo album in fifteen years and was produced by Miller, recorded by Mike Poole, and mixed by Miller and Alasdair MacKenzie.
The album follows In the Throes, his critically acclaimed 2023 collaboration with his wife Julie Miller, and features appearances by Emmylou Harris, The War & Treaty, Lee Ann Womack, Shawn Colvin, Ashley Monroe, Elizabeth Cook, Jim Lauderdale, Dan Penn, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams.
The core band on Buddy Miller includes Fred Eltringham on drums and percussion, Viktor Krauss on bass, Tim Lauer on keyboards, and Steve Fishell on pedal steel, with frequent appearances from The McCrary Sisters. Together, they have made music filled with country soul, plus a sprinkling of early rock ‘n’ roll, gospel, and anything that comes straight from the heart.
Relix Magazine premiered the album’s lead-off track, “As Long As I Have You,” which features The McCrary Sisters.
Miller says, “This is the first of several songs featuring my friends, The McCrary Sisters. I first heard them in 2002 at the Belcourt Theater, where they were singing behind Isaac Freeman, the late, great bass voice of the Fairfield Four, with Mike Henderson on guitar. A year later, when I started writing Universal United House of Prayer, singing with the McCrary's became the goal.”
Glide Magazine previously premiered the album standout “Don’t Look Back,” saying, “Few artists command the kind of respect Buddy Miller has earned over the last four decades... Miller has built a career on taste, humility, and an uncanny ability to elevate every song he touches.”
“Don't Look Back” features Dan Penn, the legendary co-writer of “The Dark End of the Street,” “I'm Your Puppet,” “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man,” and countless other classics.
Buddy Miller is kind and patient, like love is supposed to be, played with understated nuance. Songs came from those same places, and Miller will admit to having started with 50-odd possibilities before the winnowing, which yields an early Temptations hit, a Jesse Winchester track, plus the delightful “Till the Wheels Come Off,” which Ashley Monroe, Elizabeth Cook, Angaleena Presley, and Meg McRee wrote about Buddy and his wife Julie.
“The intention was to make a country soul record,” Miller says, “but then I kept running into songs Julie had written that I wanted to put in.”
So a record with soul, then. Written and performed with an awareness of time, and of its passing.
