The uplifting 89-minute documentary offers a look into the creative mastery and turbulent personal life of the legendary rock star, capturing the period of 1993-1995 when Petty worked with producer Rick Rubin for the first time. The sessions produced volumes of personal work, and the album was Petty’s fastest selling. Certified Triple Platinum by the RIAA only nine months after its release, it charted at #8 on the Billboard 200 and was recently included on Rolling Stone’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” The new physical edition features 30 minutes of bonus content, including never-before-seen outtakes from the film and four promotional music videos from 2020.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Mary Wharton (Jimmy Carter: Rock and Roll President), the film features unearthed 16mm archival footage and interviews with Rick Rubin, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Adria Petty and more. It first debuted at SXSW 2021, winning the festival’s Audience Award, and went on to garner Best Documentary Film at the Boulder Film Festival, Outstanding Producer of Televised or Streamed Motion Picture at The PGA Awards, and was AFI Docs’ Official Selection. The film has received widespread critical acclaim throughout the festival season.
Celebrated for its emotional depth and rare behind-the-scenes access, Somewhere You Feel Free continues to resonate with longtime fans and new listeners alike.
