Corey Henry & The Treme Funktet release “My City,” a funk-infused New Orleans anthem following their Grammy-nominated live album.
Corey Henry & The Treme Funktet have released their brand-new NOLA anthem “My City” on May 22, on the heels of their Grammy-nominated album Corey Henry and the Treme Funktet: Live at Vaughan’s via Louisiana Red Hot Records.
The funk-infused pop single pairs Henry’s Grammy-winning trombone with hip hop vocals. Gambit Weekly writes: “Pound for pound, Corey Henry is one of the best musicians in New Orleans.” American Blues Scene writes: “Corey Henry captures the grit, groove, and legacy of New Orleans funk.” And The New York Times says that with either a taut horn section or freewheeling squall, the band’s riffs are “all muscle.”
In the new single, Corey Henry stays true to his origins in the Treme Brass Band and Rebirth Brass Band, while delivering an infectious sound including hip hop lyrics and scorching trombone solos. In the last year, Corey Henry and the Treme Funktet have toured from Switzerland to Senegal, but New Orleans remains their inspiration.
Corey has toured with Galactic and won Best Trombone from OffBeat Magazine, but he’s never more at home than holding court in New Orleans — “My City.” His longtime residency at Vaughan’s, inherited from Kermit Ruffins, is a favorite hang for legends including members of War and George Clinton’s Parliament when they’re in town on a Thursday night. Henry worked a much larger crowd at a sold-out New Orleans Jazz Fest day including Black Masking backup singers, family dancers, and the legendary Treme Funktet. “It’s a collaborational effort,” says Henry of the magic the band brings.
A longtime philanthropist, Henry won the Spirit of Satchmo Music Award for his commitment to honoring Louis Armstrong’s legacy. This summer, he continues his mission of mentoring New Orleans youth in music at the North Rampart Community Center and bringing second line culture to the people with his annual NOLA Footwork Festival. Giving back comes from the heart, as New Orleans itself was Henry's musical classroom, with mentors from Tuba Fats to Kermit Ruffins.
“Where I grew up in Treme, it was a vibrant area with social aid and pleasure clubs and brass bands,” Henry said. “I used to go and stand outside the walls and follow the second line around the block. Me and Uncle Benny Jones, Treme Brass Band for 50 years, my grandfather, Preservation Hall, and my dad, Grand Marshal with the Treme Brass Band — it’s in the blood.”
At 16, Corey’s uncle Benny invited him to join the world-renowned Treme Brass Band, so the Grammy-nominated Corey Henry and The Treme Funktet: Live at Vaughan’s album and his new anthem “My City” bring the story full circle. “I grew up listening to the music coming down the street,” Henry says. Now his music is coming out of New Orleans to the rest of the planet. Or as “My City” says: “we go hard worldwide on the scene like you never seen then we take it all the way back to New Orleans / 504 this where the funk reside / ya rocking with funkiest trombone alive.”
Reviews:
“With Live at Vaughan’s out via Louisiana Red Hot Records, Corey Henry captures the grit, groove, and legacy of New Orleans funk.” — American Blues Scene
“Pound for pound, Corey Henry is one of the best musicians in New Orleans. He's a phenom on the trombone, to be sure, but he’s also an incredibly charismatic band leader. His weekly gig with the Treme Funktet at Vaughn’s is so dimly lit you can barely see the band — but you can still feel Henry. It's a tight outfit that can put out some of the best jazz and funk in New Orleans. Henry and The Treme Funktet captured some of that live magic on their recently released album, Live at Vaughan’s.” — Gambit Weekly
“Electric funk bands that plug in onstage and brass bands whose instruments are ready to pick up and parade are both New Orleans assets. Corey Henry, who has been a member of the redoubtable Rebirth Brass Band and Galactic, combined them in his Treme Funktet set at Jazz Fest. The brass — including on trumpet his daughter, Jazz, a member of the all-female Original Pinettes Brass Band — could work like a taut horn section or a freewheeling squall; the band’s riffs were all muscle.” — The New York Times
