Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country Brings Psychedelic Honky-Tonk Fire to The Rose Music Center

On a perfect summer evening at The Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, Ohio, Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country continued its remarkable ascent with a performance that showcased why the Nashville guitarist and bandleader has become one of the most talked-about young artists around. Sharing the bill with country music legend Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives, Donato delivered a short but electrifying headlining set that felt like a 1960s Acid Test taking place at a honky-tonk bar in Nashville.

The June 20 stop at Rose Music Center was part of a short run of co-headlining dates featuring Donato and Stuart, with Stuart taking the opening slot on this night. The pairing felt natural and a bit like a passing of the torch between generational talents. Stuart has spent decades preserving and celebrating country music's rich history, while Donato, who has been honing his skills on Nashville’s Broadway Street since his early teenage years, is carrying those same influences into new territory, blending classic country, bluegrass, rock, and psychedelia into his own cosmic concoction.

The Rose provided an ideal backdrop for the evening. The 4,200-capacity outdoor amphitheater is perfect for outdoor summer concerts, and on this night, fans were treated to comfortable temperatures and clear skies. The venue’s layout ensures excellent views throughout for every seat, and the staff was outstanding all night.

For Donato and company, the evening represented another opportunity to win over new listeners. While many in attendance arrived early to see Marty Stuart, the Cosmic Country faithful were out in full force, and by the end of the evening, it was difficult to tell where one fanbase ended and the other began.

Donato opened with “Cosmic Country Gardens,” immediately establishing the band's signature high-energy flavor of twang. Joined by Nathan “Sugarlegg” Aronowitz on keyboards, Will “Mustang” McGee on bass, and Will “Bronco” Clark on drums, the quartet displayed the chemistry that only comes from seasoned musicians who are putting in the work of nonstop touring and recording. All four musicians moved effortlessly between tightly arranged pieces and exploratory improvisation, creating immense amounts of tension and release with nearly every song.

One of the night's highlights arrived with a pairing of Marty Robbins' “Big Iron” and an instrumental take on the western classic “Ghost Riders in the Sky.” These two songs perfectly encapsulate the psychedelic cowboy aura that Donato radiates throughout his music. Rather than treating the songs as museum pieces and covering them as they were originally written, Donato and company injected them with fresh energy, stretching out the melodies and showcasing their instrumental chops while remaining faithful to the spirit of the originals.

Other standout moments included a lively rendition of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Honky Tonk Night Time Man” and the blues-infused “Better Deal Blues.” The closing sequence of “Luck of the Draw” into “Sugar Leg Rag” demonstrated why the band continues to attract fans from both the country and jam-band worlds. Extended instrumental passages never felt flashy; instead, they functioned as conversations between four musicians who clearly trust one another onstage. After each member took a turn ripping their respective instruments during what felt like a never-ending jam, “Sugar Leg Rag” ended sharply at 11 o’clock as the house lights turned back on.

Throughout the performance, Donato's guitar work on his signature Telecaster remained the focal point. His playing combines insane technical precision with a sense of playfulness that keeps his original material and classic covers feeling fresh. Yet one of the band's greatest strengths is its collective approach. Sugarlegg’s tasteful keyboard textures blend seamlessly into Donato’s guitar playing, while Mustang's rock-solid basslines and Bronco's dynamic drumming move the music forward like a forceful locomotive, which explains why the band plays so many songs about trains.

Looking ahead, Donato shows no signs of slowing down. Cosmic Country continues to expand its national footprint through an increasingly ambitious touring schedule, with summer and fall dates expected to bring the band to larger venues and festivals across the country. The group has spent the past year building momentum with material from Horizons, while also cultivating a devoted live following through extensive touring and the regular release of professionally captured concert recordings.

If the Rose Music Center performance was any indication, their future remains exceptionally bright. Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country occupies a rare space in today's musical landscape: rooted in tradition, yet exploring new territories every time they step on stage.
