Tuesday Dead Drops returns with two newly mastered Grateful Dead shows from a hot band in 1989 and 1991, pulled from the original DATs recorded by Dan Healy.
The first stop is Riverfront Arena in Cincinnati on April 8, 1989. With Ann Arbor in the rearview, the band opens with “Let the Good Times Roll” into “Wang Dang Doodle,” getting the room moving early. Brent Mydland delivers a huge “Blow Away,” followed by a soulful “Loser” and a sharp “Cassidy” into “Don’t Ease Me In” to close the first set.
The second set has plenty to dig into, including “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Eyes of the World,” and a strong post-Space run of “The Wheel” > “Dear Mr. Fantasy” > “Hey Jude” > “I Need a Miracle” > “Black Peter.” Phil Lesh’s “Box of Rain” encore is the right landing spot.
The second release heads to Shoreline Amphitheatre on August 18, 1991, the final night of a six-show West Coast run. “Hell in a Bucket” opens with force, and Bruce Hornsby is all over the night, especially on “West L.A. Fadeaway” and “When I Paint My Masterpiece.”
The second set takes an unusual path with “Deal” into “Samson and Delilah” > “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” > “Feel Like a Stranger,” moving into Drums and Space before the band eases into “China Doll.” A charged “Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad” > “Throwing Stones” > “Not Fade Away” closes the set, with “Brokedown Palace” sending everyone home.
Curated by David Lemieux and mastered by David Glasser, both shows are available now in Hi-Res via PlayDead.
