Dead Drops Tuesday is underway, and archivist David Lemieux opens the new weekly series with the first two nights from the Grateful Dead’s August 1991 run at Shoreline Amphitheatre.
The series begins with the band’s August 16 and August 17, 1991 performances in Mountain View, California, both now streaming in hi-res exclusively through Play Dead.
“We’re starting this series in the Bay Area, with a two-night snapshot from the Shoreline run in August ’91 - coming right off Cal Expo the week before. By this point, nearly a year into the Vince Welnick and Bruce Hornsby lineup, the band is settled, confident, and clearly enjoying exploring the music, this setting helps - outdoors, back yard, California crowd, safety achieved.” — Martin Knott
Both shows were newly mastered by GRAMMY-winning engineer David Glasser from the original Dan Healy DATs.
For Deadheads, this is a strong way to launch the series. August 16 delivers a first set that closes with “Dark Star > Promised Land,” while the second set moves through “Scarlet Begonias > Victim Or The Crime > Fire On The Mountain > Truckin’” before landing on “Standing On the Moon” and “Good Lovin’.”
The following night opens with “Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin’s Tower” and heads into a second set that includes “Smokestack Lightning > He’s Gone > Drums > Dark Star Jam > Morning Dew,” followed by “One More Saturday Night” and an encore of “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue.”
