Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley has long been one of Northern California’s most beloved musical homes—a place where the echoes of the Bay Area’s countercultural past mingle freely with the sounds of new generations of musicians. Established in 1972 and now operating as a nonprofit arts organization, the intimate venue continues its tradition of presenting an eclectic lineup of live music while nurturing community, creativity, and connection.
This spring’s schedule reflects that wide-ranging spirit. From bluegrass jams and youth showcases to psychedelic celebrations, funk royalty, and deep Grateful Dead lineage, the coming weeks at Sweetwater Music Hall promise something for nearly every corner of the live music world.
For Deadheads and lovers of the Bay Area’s long, strange trip, several shows stand out. The legendary David Nelson Band—anchored by the founding guitarist of the New Riders of the Purple Sage and longtime collaborator within the extended Grateful Dead universe—returns for a two-night run on March 27 and 28. Nelson’s performances carry the warm glow of San Francisco’s psychedelic heritage, blending roots rock, country soul, and the improvisational freedom that helped define the West Coast sound.
The spirit of Jerry Garcia also flows strongly through the room on April 17 when Jerry’s Middle Finger arrives for a sold-out night dedicated to the timeless music of the Jerry Garcia Band. Few groups channel Garcia’s soulful songbook with the same reverence and joyful abandon, and the demand for this show speaks volumes about the enduring love for those melodies.
Another highlight arrives on April 19 when psychedelic art-rock collective Moonalice hosts its annual 420 Gathering of the Tribe. Starting appropriately at 4:20 p.m., the event blends music, community, and counterculture celebration—very much in the spirit of the Bay Area’s colorful hippie lineage. Known for their vibrant poster art, improvisational jams, and a devoted fan community, Moonalice events often feel as much like communal gatherings as concerts.
Just days earlier, funk legend George Porter Jr. brings his band Runnin’ Pardners to Sweetwater for two nights on April 10 and 11. As the legendary bassist of The Meters, Porter helped define the rhythmic DNA of New Orleans funk, influencing generations of musicians across jam bands, rock, jazz, and beyond. His groove-heavy performances remain essential viewing for anyone who loves the deep pocket where funk and improvisation meet.
Elsewhere on the calendar, the venue continues to showcase its wide stylistic range. Progressive rock explorers Lespecial perform March 19 with Collectivity, followed by Venezuelan Latin-funk powerhouse Los Amigos Invisibles on March 20. Americana and roots energy arrives March 21 with Dead Winter Carpenters, while bluegrass lovers can gather for the monthly Marin Bluegrass Sessions jam on March 22.
Later in the spring, the lineup continues with highlights including Marshall Crenshaw (April 9), Fleetwood Mask performing the music of Fleetwood Mac (April 18), and a powerful blues showcase featuring Miss Faye Carol, Lady Bianca, Alvon Johnson, and Alabama Mike on April 5.
The venue also maintains its commitment to community programming with workshops, youth showcases, open mic nights, and student performances throughout the month. Programs like BandWorks and the Marin School of the Arts Rock Band Showcase continue Sweetwater’s long-standing mission of cultivating the next generation of musicians.
Operating as a nonprofit organization, Sweetwater Music Hall remains dedicated to the idea that music has the power to inspire change and bring people together. The venue’s intimate setting—just north of the Golden Gate Bridge—has become a gathering place where legends, rising artists, and devoted fans share the same room and the same musical moment.
Doors typically open one hour before showtime. To view the latest listings, purchase tickets, or learn more about membership and community programs, visit sweetwatermusichall.org.
