DEVOTCHKA – 02.14.26 – BOULDER THEATER
It began with a chance moment on KCRW’s acclaimed program Morning Becomes Eclectic — the kind of serendipity that rewrites careers and reshapes cultural moments. When filmmakers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris heard the evocative, orchestral sound of DeVotchKa drifting across the Santa Monica airwaves, they knew instantly they had discovered the emotional core of their upcoming indie film Little Miss Sunshine.
The instinct proved prophetic. DeVotchKa’s sweeping, bittersweet score became the sonic backbone of the Hoover family’s cross-country odyssey. Their music captured the film’s pulsing themes — hope, resilience, messy dreams, and the strange, beautiful ways families hold each other together. Tracks like “Til the End of Time” and “How It Ends” not only propelled key scenes, such as Olive’s unforgettable dance finale, but became cultural touchstones in their own right.
Their work earned a Grammy nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album, while the film itself went on to win two Academy Awards. Almost overnight, the Denver ensemble’s lush, cinematic sound reached a global audience — and in doing so, became forever intertwined with one of independent cinema’s defining classics.
Now, twenty years later, the band is returning to the music that changed everything. DeVotchKa will celebrate the landmark collaboration with a special anniversary tour: A Tribute to the Music of Little Miss Sunshine. The performance honors not only the soundtrack that helped shape a generation of indie film lovers, but the unlikely chain of events that began with a radio signal, a perfect piece of music at the perfect moment, and a story about embracing the things that make you different.
Audiences are invited to revisit the score and songs that propelled DeVotchKa into the cultural spotlight — a reminder that some of the most lasting art is born from the most unexpected twists of fate.
