Australia-based recording artist Ella Hooper will release her fourth solo album, Overnight Success, worldwide on October 2.
The record is not exactly Hooper’s “gone country” moment—after all, how can someone “go country” when they are from the country in the first place?—but Overnight Success can certainly be described as the former Killing Heidi frontwoman’s Nashville album.
When it came time to record the new LP, Hooper found herself immersed in Music City’s deep pool of musicianship, surrounded by top session players and songwriters. The experience unlocked a new piece of her creative identity.
“I guess it’s not very original to say I found myself in Nashville,” Hooper says. “In some ways it’s a muso’s Camino trail, or a stint in the Ashram. My heroes, from Dylan to CMAT, have made their pilgrimages, and so I’ve always, always dreamed about doing it too.”
The resulting album is Hooper’s most confident body of work yet, bringing together the many musical chapters of her career. It draws from her rise to pop-rock stardom, her Americana-leaning return to the stage and studio with The Verses, and the Stevie Nicks-inspired leap into her evolving solo career.
Overnight Success moves through each of those worlds, reflecting their highs and lows while signaling the beginning of a new era for Hooper.
The album may also be the most humorous record she has made. Its title offers a knowing wink at a career that has already spanned decades. Beneath that humor, however, Overnight Success explores what happens after the fire of dramatic change finally burns out.
Within the span of a year, Hooper lost both of her parents to cancer, ended a long-term relationship, and parted ways with her management and booking agent. As relaxed and charming as the album may sound on the surface, it also captures a woman deciding that she has nothing left to prove and no desire to continue serving outdated systems.
The artist who once topped the charts with teenage angst anthems now offers a soundtrack for releasing lingering limitations and embracing whatever comes next.
Hooper has also shared the album’s latest single, “When the Shit Went Down.” The song fills in the space between the conclusion of her previous album and the beginning of this new chapter.
Built around an easy swagger and Petty-inspired guitar hooks, “When the Shit Went Down” finds Hooper reflecting on the losses she has endured during the past several years.
“When the shit went down, it shook my family tree / When the shit went down, it came for the core of me,” she sings, beginning the healing process with an honest reckoning.
Fans can stream or purchase “When the Shit Went Down” HERE. Hooper’s previously released singles, “Growing Up Is Hard to Do” and “I Got Eyes (On You),” are also available now.
