Folk Alliance International (FAI), the foremost global nonprofit organization dedicated to folk music, has officially opened applications for Official Showcase Artists for its 39th annual conference, set for January 27–31, 2027, in Chicago, Illinois.
Applications for Official Showcase Artists opened May 1 and will remain open through June 8, 2026. The conference, returning to Chicago for the first time since 1991, will take place at the historic Chicago Hilton. Artists can apply now through the organization’s official website.
Pre-registration for members attending the 2027 conference also opened May 1, alongside applications for the Mike Seeger Traditional Fellowship, first-time artist and industry scholarships, volunteer opportunities, and press credentials.
The Mike Seeger Traditional Fellowship continues in the spirit of the late musician and folklorist Mike Seeger by supporting tradition bearers — both elders and younger practitioners — who preserve and share their cultural music traditions. Past recipients include Gilles Losier and Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes.
FAI’s Official Showcase Artist Scholarships also return for a second year, helping offset travel, lodging, and registration costs for selected performers. Last year, the organization supported 28 official showcase artists, providing complimentary registrations for more than 70 musicians and distributing over $36,000 in travel assistance.
Folk Alliance International Executive Director Jennifer Roe said:
“We are so excited to bring the conference to Chicago. There are so many rich musical traditions that the Chicago scene fosters: blues, gospel, regional Mexican-American musics, salsa, cumbia, house, hip hop, alt-country, and beyond. We look forward to welcoming musicians and attendees from Chicago and from the whole world to our conference in January.”
Artists selected for Official Showcases will be notified on July 31, with the full lineup announcement arriving August 18. Approximately 150 artists will ultimately be chosen from hundreds of applicants to perform on the conference’s largest stages for audiences filled with agents, DJs, promoters, labels, venues, media outlets, and music organizations from around the globe.
The 2026 Folk Alliance International conference in New Orleans featured more than 160 official showcase artists representing 28 countries and 25 U.S. states, marking one of the largest and most internationally diverse conferences in the organization’s history.
The annual conference remains one of the most important gatherings in roots and folk music, bringing together artists, labels, venue operators, radio programmers, agents, publicists, nonprofits, and fans for five days of networking, performances, workshops, panels, and late-night private showcases that transform hotel rooms into intimate performance spaces.
Founded in 1989, Folk Alliance International defines folk music broadly as “the music of the people,” embracing a diverse range of traditions and styles including Americana, blues, bluegrass, Cajun, Celtic, global roots, hip-hop, old-time, singer-songwriter, spoken word, zydeco, and beyond.
Future conference locations previously announced by FAI include Kansas City in 2028 and New Orleans in both 2030 and 2032.
