When asked why he and Fred Tackett decided to record an album, Honest Men, and perform as a duo, Little Feat guitarist — and former music director for Gregg Allman — Scott Sharrard shrugged, “Really, we just want to jam.”
Fred agreed. He’d toured with the late Paul Barrere as a duo for many years, and found that playing with Scott was also a delight, with “total trust in each other,” playing “that we don’t have to think about.”
Pretty remarkable for a new guy who’d been brought in to substitute for an ailing Paul and was standing onstage setting up for the first time when he was told that Paul had passed.
Honest Men honors the fallen — Lowell George, Paul Barrere, Gregg Allman — and Fred and Scott’s own songwriting. The title is also a tribute to their recording style, which was pure: live in the studio without even headphones and almost no overdubs.
“Honest Man” was a Fred Tackett and Lowell George tune. “Dance to the Radio” is a Fred Tackett song from the ’70s. “Fool Yourself,” written by Fred for the Dixie Chicken album 15 years before he formally joined the band, “Midnight Flight,” and “Roll Um Easy” are classic Feat songs, and “My Only True Friend” was a song Scott co-wrote with Gregg Allman for their Grammy-nominated Southern Blood album.
Great songs and a wonderful conversation between two musicians — honest!
