In true migratory bird fashion, Connecticut-based indie-groove band Goose made their second tropical appearance this winter, playing three sets on “Rock Legends Cruise” this weekend. Taking place aboard Royal Caribbean’s “Independence of the Seas,” the five-day floating festival featured performances by musical legends of the past six decades, including Roger Daltrey (The Who), Nancy Wilson (Heart), Robby Kreiger (The Doors), Larkin Poe and Brandon “Taz” Niederauer.
Goose opened the weekend with a cover-heavy late-night performance in the boat’s “Studio B.” After a blistering “Madhuvan,” Goose weaved Billy Joel’s “Moving Out,” The Band’s “WS Walcott’s Medicine Show,” and Stevie Wonder’s “Boogie on Reggae Woman” in between several original tracks, completing an intricate 75-minute set.
Night two saw Goose visit the pool deck stage for another late-night soiree. After opening with their 2019 tropical-themed single, “Butter Rum,” the band launched into a funky rendition of “Hot Tea,” before performing their take on Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Green River,” last time played in Mexico and Dead and Company’s Playing in the Sand. After a slow and melodic take on “All I Need,” the band segued into the reggae-tinged track “Echo of a Rose” before diving into Bruce Hornsby’s “The Way it Is.” “Jive I,” “Indian River” and Bobby Blue Bland’s “Boogie on Reggae Woman” closed the set.
Rick Mitarotonda (Guitar, Vocals) and Peter Anspach (Guitar, Keyboard, Vocals) were invited to join the “Gary Hoey All-Star Jam” on Saturday night. Joined by Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) and a host of talented musicians, The two riffed on Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way”, ZZ Top’s “Tush,” Stevie Ray Vaughn’s “Pride and Joy,” and Chuck Berry’ “Johnny B. Good.”
Goose kicked off the festivities in Studio B with an 11:30 am set on Sunday morning. Following “Lead the Way” and “Elizabeth,” Goose invited 16-year old virtuoso Brandon “Taz” Niederauer to the stage for a funky version of The Wood Brothers’ “Atlas.” The 10-minute jam featured tremendous interplay between Mitaratonda and Niederauer and prompted roaring applause from the crowd. Following a cover of Paul Simon’s “Me and Julio Down by the School Yard,” (featuring a whistle solo by LD Andrew Goedde), Goose closed the weekend with fan-favorite “Arcadia.”
Goose continues their nationwide winter tour this week with shows in Cleveland, Grand Rapids (MI), Chicago and St. Louis.
