Grateful Dead’s 1973 Syracuse and 1992 Atlanta Shows Arrive on Play Dead

This week’s Dead Drops Tuesday takes a slight detour from Spring Tour 1992 for a newly mastered gem from 1973. Now streaming in Hi-Res on Play Dead are the Grateful Dead’s September 17, 1973 show at Onondaga County War Memorial in Syracuse and the March 1, 1992 Spring Tour opener at The Omni in Atlanta.

The Syracuse show finds saxophonist Martin Fierro and trumpeter Joe Ellis joining the band during its short-lived Fall Tour experiment with horns. The performance opens with “Tennessee Jed” and continues through a collection of 1973 favorites before a second set that includes “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo,” Keith Godchaux’s “Let Me Sing Your Blues Away,” and a sequence of “Truckin’” into “Eyes of the World,” “Weather Report Suite” and “Stella Blue.”

The Atlanta show opens the Dead’s 1992 Spring Tour with a first set featuring “Jack Straw,” “Althea” and the then-new “So Many Roads.” A second-set “Scarlet Begonias” into “Fire on the Mountain” leads toward an encore of “The Weight.”

Writing about the releases, Martin Knott recalled making the trip to Atlanta: “We drove from Cincinnati for the first two nights, exams and all, and I flew back for the third.”

September 17, 1973 was recorded by Kidd Candelario from the Grateful Dead 7-inch reels. March 1, 1992 was recorded by Dan Healy on Ampex 467 DATs. Both shows have been curated from the Vault by David Lemieux, mastered by David Glasser, and are streaming exclusively on Play Dead.
