Grateful Dead ticket stub from Madison Square Garden, September 18, 1988.
Madison Square Garden in the fall always had a certain electricity around the Grateful Dead, and September 1988 was no exception. The Garden run was gritty, bright, unpredictable, and very New York—one of those late-’80s stretches where the band could turn a familiar room into a living organism, breathing in time with the crowd and sending that old pulse rattling out into the streets after the lights came up.
David Lemieux has us diving deeper into the legendary ’88 Garden run, and the vibe is just exactly perfect. Newly mastered from the original Dan Healy DATs, the September 16 and September 18, 1988 Madison Square Garden shows are now streaming in Hi-Res exclusively with Play Dead as part of Dead Drops Tuesday.
September 16, 1988, offers plenty of first-set charm, with a rare “To Lay Me Down” tucked alongside “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” and a beautiful “Bird Song.” The second set takes flight with “China Cat Sunflower” into “I Know You Rider,” then rolls through “Ship of Fools” and into an “Estimated Prophet” > “Terrapin Station” sequence that sends the room into orbit before “Drums” and “Space” open the door to the backside. From there, “I Need A Miracle,” “Dear Mr. Fantasy” > “Hey Jude,” and “Sugar Magnolia” bring the house home, with “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” closing the night.
The first set kept its foot on the gas with “Never Trust A Woman,” “Big Railroad Blues,” “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again,” “Stagger Lee,” and “Promised Land.” It was lean, punchy, and confident, with Garcia’s voice and guitar carrying that unmistakable late-’80s sparkle when everything lined up just right.
The second set is where the night became something larger. “Not Fade Away” opened the door, and from there the band slipped into “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire on the Mountain,” with traces of “Not Fade Away” seeming to ripple through the show like a signal bouncing off the Garden walls. “Man Smart, Woman Smarter” kept the dance floor loose before “Drums” and “Space” cracked things open into the deep water.
Out of that came “The Other One,” short but powerful, gnarly in the best sense—intense, out there, wicked, and crackling with that dangerous late-set electricity the Dead could summon when the room was fully dialed in. It didn’t need to stretch forever to make its point; it hit hard, cracked the Garden open, and left a mark before giving way to “Wharf Rat,” with Jerry’s voice sparkling in the room.
One of the clearest memories from that night came after the show, when the “Not Fade Away” chant spilled out of Madison Square Garden and into the streets. It was loud—very loud—with fans carrying the rhythm around the Garden while car horns joined in, honking out the beat as if Manhattan itself had decided to keep the encore going. Some shows end when the band leaves the stage. This one kept walking down Seventh Avenue.
