Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and musician Gregory Alan Isakov and Sylvan Esso share their rendition of Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You” today; listen/share HERE.
Produced by Isakov and Dave Wilton (Nathaniel Rateliff, A Boy & His Kite, Josh Garrels), the track is performed almost entirely by Isakov himself, as he plays acoustic guitar, baritone guitar, drums, banjo, piano, organ, and more, with vocals from Sylvan Esso’s Amelia Meath.
“I grew up listening to Mazzy Star and sort of sketched this song out one afternoon. I had read an article about Hope Sandoval (the singer of Mazzy Star) the week before, and there was this paragraph about how she played a few shows at the Sydney Opera House in almost complete darkness. Some of the crowd was super disgruntled about it and walked out. I remember thinking, ‘Wow, what a badass. She’s my absolute hero,’” shares Isakov.
“I sat on the recording I made for a long time, thinking it wasn’t quite finished, and reached out to Amelia of Sylvan Esso. She has one of my favorite voices of all time. Once I heard her on it, it felt ready. I really love how it came out.”
The track is the latest in a series of collaborations for Isakov, who recently released songs with Noah Kahan, Nathaniel Rateliff, Shovels & Rope, Jeremiah Fraites (of The Lumineers), and will be featured on the upcoming Kacey Musgraves album.
Following two recent sold-out shows at New York’s historic Radio City Music Hall, Isakov is set to return to Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre for two sold-out nights with the Colorado Symphony this Labor Day weekend. He will also perform a special show at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia, with the National Symphony Orchestra this summer, headline the Telluride Bluegrass Festival this June, and perform at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl this fall.
Isakov will also join Brandi Carlile and Zach Bryan on select tour dates. See below for complete tour itinerary.
Beloved by his devoted community of fans, critics, and fellow artists alike, Isakov has garnered over 1 billion streams to date and is celebrated as one of today’s most compelling and poetic singer-songwriters. He has released seven studio albums to date, including 2023’s Appaloosa Bones, of which The Associated Press praised, “His new songs are relentlessly majestic, a kind of musical morphine,” while Paste declared, “he’s continuing to make expertly-tooled music…it’s reliably beautiful and starkly self-possessed throughout.”
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and raised in Philadelphia, Isakov now calls Colorado home. When he isn’t on the road, he spends much of his time writing and recording songs in his barn studio, as well as running Starling Farm, his farm in Boulder County.
