New Orleans has a way of making special nights feel natural, and Greensky Bluegrass tapped directly into that spirit during their show at the legendary Tipitina’s when hometown keyboard force Ivan Neville joined the band onstage.

The guest appearance brought added Crescent City soul to an already festive evening, with Neville sitting in on Greensky’s “Lose My Way” before helping steer the band through a joyous cover of “Man Smart, Woman Smarter.”

For Deadheads, “Man Smart, Woman Smarter” needs little introduction. While the song traces back through Caribbean folk tradition and was popularized by artists including Harry Belafonte, it found a second life in the Grateful Dead catalog, where Bob Weir turned it into a full-band party starter throughout the 1980s and beyond.

Greensky’s version leaned into that celebratory spirit, and with Neville onstage in New Orleans, the tune landed exactly where it belonged — rhythmic, loose, and built for dancing.

Ivan Neville, long known for his work with The Neville Brothers, Dumpy, and Dumpstaphunk, brought his trademark funk touch to the collaboration, adding another layer of authenticity to the Tipitina’s moment.

The sit-in also continues Greensky’s long-running habit of blending bluegrass roots with adventurous song choices and jam-minded spontaneity, one reason the band remains a favorite across multiple scenes.

Earlier this month, Greensky released the documentary film Find Ourselves Lost: The Iceland Sessions, capturing the band recording 2024’s The Iceland Sessions in rural North Iceland while documenting the creative process, struggles, and triumphs behind the project.

The documentary arrives amid a busy summer touring schedule and on the heels of the band’s acclaimed new album XXV, a retrospective celebration of Greensky’s long journey featuring contributions from Nathaniel Rateliff, Billy Strings, Sam Bush, Aoife O’Donovan, and more.

As for Thursday night in New Orleans, it was one more reminder that when great songs meet the right room and the right guests, magic still happens.
