Colorado gets a three-night jolt of high-wire, anything-can-happen Grateful Dead alchemy this summer as Joe Russo’s Almost Dead rolls through the Front Range and the high country for a quick, potent run: Mission Ballroom in Denver, the scenic Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail, and the lakeside Dillon Amphitheater in Dillon. If you’ve seen this band stretch a familiar melody into a brand-new map, you already know: “cover band” doesn’t quite cover it.
Joe Russo’s Almost Dead is Marco Benevento, Dave Dreiwitz, Tom Hamilton, Scott Metzger, and Joe Russo—five musicians treating the Grateful Dead songbook like a living, breathing organism. One night might lean into deep rhythmic pocket and left-field segues; the next could detour into blistering peaks, hairpin turns, and the kind of collective improvisation that leaves a room grinning like it just got away with something.
