John Oates Releases New Single “Goodnight Or Goodbye”

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, and multi-GRAMMY nominee John Oates releases his new single, “Goodnight Or Goodbye,” available now on all streaming platforms.

“Goodnight Or Goodbye” takes listeners back to the uncertainty and innocence of young love, blending Oates’ timeless songwriting with the nostalgic sounds of ’60s doo-wop. The song was originally recorded by Oates on an old tape in 1992 and recently rediscovered, inspiring him to revisit the track and bring it to life with a fresh recording.

Oates shares, “I rediscovered this song on an old tape that I recorded in 1992. I wanted to tap into the uncertainty of young love, and it seemed like a ’60s retro approach kind of fit that teenage dilemma. Plus, I just wanted to find an excuse to do a ’60s-style doo-wop tune and sing all the background harmonies.”

A co-founder of legendary duo Hall & Oates, John Oates is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame, a BMI Icon, and a recipient of the Troubadour Award. As part of Hall & Oates, he recorded 21 albums, scored 10 No. 1 records, and earned more than 20 Top 40 hits, with the duo selling more than 80 million records worldwide.

Over the past 25 years, Oates has established an equally accomplished career as a solo artist, releasing eight albums and numerous singles. His 2017 autobiography, Change of Season, became an Amazon bestseller.

Singing from the time he could talk and playing guitar since the age of five, Oates was destined for a life in music. Born in New York City, his family relocated to a small town outside Philadelphia in the early 1950s, where his earliest musical memories were shaped by his parents’ love of Big Band and Swing music from the 1940s. His musical journey has paralleled the evolution of rock and American popular music, drawing influence from early rock ’n’ roll, the folk revival of the early 1960s, and the classic soul and R&B of the era.

Those influences continue to shape Oates’ solo work, which has become an important part of Nashville’s Americana music community. His most recent self-titled album, OATES, leans into his R&B, pop, and soul influences and features collaborations with both emerging and established artists, highlighting his skills as a songwriter, producer, and instrumentalist.

Oates continues to tour worldwide, performing with a world-class R&B band as well as presenting his intimate “An Evening of Songs and Stories” performances, which have garnered rave reviews.

He will continue touring throughout the remainder of 2026, bringing both his full-band performances and intimate acoustic shows to audiences across the country and around the world. See all tour dates below.

Beyond music, Oates is an avid outdoorsman with a longstanding passion for motorsports. He has competed in both amateur SCCA and professional IMSA racing and continues to pursue his passion for automobiles through his collection of vintage sports cars, participation in concours events, and membership in the Porsche Club of America.
