There’s something beautiful happening right now with the lifers—the ones who never stopped making music, never chased trends, never really left the road even if the road changed shape. Jonathan Segel, longtime multi-instrumentalist and sonic architect behind Camper Van Beethoven, is one of those rare figures, and in 2026 he’s still pushing forward with something new to say.
Segel returns this summer with Puzzle World, a new solo album arriving June 5, 2026, a collection that leans into loud guitars, raw ideas, and decades of accumulated musical perspective. Known for his wide-ranging work across violin, guitar, keys, and production wizardry, Segel shifts gears here toward something more direct and rock-driven—drawing comparisons to the spirit of Neil Young and Richard Thompson, while still retaining that unmistakable off-center creativity that defined Camper Van Beethoven’s influence on indie and DIY culture.
Leading the release is the early single “World Still Burns”, a protest song that Segel felt couldn’t wait for the full album cycle. It’s urgent, reflective, and grounded in the same kind of truth-telling that has always run through his work.
The album itself feels like the product of a musician taking stock—not slowing down, but digging deeper. As Segel puts it in his own words, many of the artists from his era are “going to seed,” a kind of late creative bloom where the music keeps coming, maybe even stronger than before. Puzzle World fits right into that space: reflective, exploratory, and unfiltered.
The record features contributions from a wide circle of collaborators, including fellow Camper Van Beethoven members, along with Scott McCaughey (Minus 5/Young Fresh Fellows), John Moen (The Decemberists), Chris Cacavas (Green on Red), and others, reinforcing the deep musical community Segel has been part of for decades.
