Sonic Youth co-founder and pioneering experimental-rock guitarist Lee Ranaldo has reimagined his original soundtrack for The System, reshaping the music into a newly sequenced album featuring previously unreleased material.
The System is available digitally today exclusively through Bandcamp. Black and colored vinyl editions will follow October 2 via Silver Current Records and are available to pre-order now.
Originally created for Dutch filmmaker Joris Postema’s environmental documentary of the same name, the soundtrack has been resequenced and reconfigured into an album that stands apart from the film. Ranaldo has added unreleased music written and recorded for the documentary, giving the project new life as both a return to drone-based improvisation and an exploration of introspective downtown tension.
The album features contributions from Leila Bordreuil, Jim Jarmusch, Brian Chase, Yonatan Gat, Balázs Pándi, Raül Refree, Avishag Cohen Rodrigues, and Marc Urselli.
Quietly released in a more cinematic form in 2025, The System now emerges as a broader and more immersive work, showcasing Ranaldo’s signature balance of melody, noise, free improvisation, and composed music.
The film follows three climate activists confronting a political and economic system they see as increasingly hostile to meaningful environmental change. While the documentary examines despair, frustration, and the apparent futility of resistance, it also captures the determination that has sustained protest movements throughout history.
Ranaldo’s expansive guitar palette mirrors that emotional tension. His music shifts between hope and despair, beauty and dissonance, meditation and unease.
Like other landmark guitar-driven film scores—including Bruce Langhorne’s work on The Hired Hand, Neil Young’s sparse and ghostly music for Dead Man, and Popol Vuh’s hypnotic score for Nosferatu—The System moves beyond the traditional boundaries of soundtrack music. Its spectral gestures and meditative forms allow the album to exist in a world entirely its own.
The record opens with the rhythmic Lower Manhattan grime of “Tajikistan (Nice to Meet You),” recalling the kind of fractured guitar dialogue heard in Robert Quine and Jody Harris’ Escape. From there, the album moves through an evolving sequence of drones, acoustic passages, improvisations, and environmental textures.
As collaborators enter the picture, new sonic landscapes unfold. “Berlin Blockade” moves with a ritualistic pulse, while “Bergelmir” builds a haunted architecture of overtones. “Instruments of Violence” is driven by cavernous acoustic strumming, creating one of the record’s most stark and physical moments.
The album closes with the high-lonesome standard “Cool Water.” Each unhurried note trails into long reverb as shifting vocal harmonies lift the song skyward. It offers a note of hope on a record where existential dread is never far beneath the surface.
Ultimately, The System functions as both a film score and a hallucinatory, largely instrumental guitar album. Songs, improvisations, and meditations gradually merge into a blurred whole.
The album’s expansive fabric grows from a collective sound built around Ranaldo’s unmistakable tones, absorbing and amplifying the contributions of each musician involved. Like the activists at the center of the film, the music searches for a way through gathering darkness without surrendering to despair.
